Could Angel Pagan be the stop gap CF? He's never going to be anything special, but he could put up a a better OPS than Pierre. He's also young and there's a good chance he'll improve. Then, we could leave Pie at Iowa. If he's solid there, then call him up, and put Pagan on the bench or trade him. It would allow us to use money on one of the other glaring needs of the team.

LF Murton

C Barrett

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

2B Soriano

RF Jones

CF Pagan

SS Izturis

If we could dump Izzy for somebody, I'd be thrilled.

Just an idea.

I think this has been discussed before. I'd be in favor of it. Pagan won't steal as many bases, but he's got speed. We has more power than, and won't hit a whole lot worse in the BA category. He's far from spectacular in the field, but then again, niether is Pierre. I'd be all for this move if it was temporarily as long as JH spends the money wisely this offseason on our other needs, which isn't a sure thing.

Even with the offesive improvement (Soriano) you proposed, I don't see how a competitive starting lineup could include both Angel Pagan and Cesar Izturis, who doesn't appear to be going anywhere, in my opinion.

Could Pagan possibly put up decent numbers over the course of a season? Is he more than a AAAA player?

Exactly. It seems as though with this offseason, all the moves are tied together, more so than before. If JH were to have Pagan in CF and, say, Cedeno at 2B and Izzy at short? Well, we'll suck even more.

Pagan is a guy I'd be fine with as the backup to Pie if Felix fell flat. But I wouldn't want to open the season with him as the starter on purpose. Even in spare duty his rate stats were worse than Pierre's. Yes, he'd be much cheaper, but I fear he'd be a huge blackhole in the lineup. Couple that with his likely defensive deficiences, and you're asking for trouble.

Pagan would be acceptable in my book with the right people around him. He covers alot of ground seems to have an average arm and looks to be patient at the plate. He impresses me with him looking to have a gameplan during most of his at bats. I know he's fallen off recently but I think if you save the 5+ mil you save from Pierre, I can accept that.

I am just very concerned about rushing Pie. I don't give a crap about Pagan, but I don't wanna screw up Pie. I trust the Iowa hitting instructors more than the MLB ones.

what about lofton on a 1 yr to go along with pagan? that said, i think that it's all up to pierre as to whether he wants to come back or not as hendry will almost certainly make him a multi year offer.

If you are trying to win next year, Pagan can not be the CF.

If you aren't trying to win, you still better have someone else competing for some time, rather than just hand it to him.

Be happy we might have a decent 5th OF, hope the next manager uses him that way, and don't try to make him something else.

I am for a Pagan/Jones platoon in CF and signing someone to fill in a corner spot. That would be better than Pierre and Jones.

Minors: .282/.339/.371

Majors: .251/.311/.401

Majors vs. lefties: .204/.290/.315

Majors vs. righties: .282/.325/.455

Pagan was bad throughout his minor league career and has been bad in the majors. He should not see time as a starter.

I am far from convinced that Pie is going to live up to his super-star potential. In reality, I don't see him being more than a very good regular with a couple of star-type seasons sprinkled in, with a high chance of a flameout and no real value ever to the Cubs.

On the other hand, I am convinced Pagan's ceiling is a top-of-the-line fourth outfielder.

As such, I'd rather see Pie in CF... Pagan may be a better bet to put up sub-par numbers... but Pie is the only one with a real shot to be beneficial to the squad.

Then again, I'd rather grab a stop-gap solution for next season in the form of Vernon Wells, Andruw Jones, or Jim Edmonds. Pie could use another year if we can afford to give it to him.

Pagan won't steal as many bases, but he's got speed.

Pagan's problem with stolen bases is reading, not speed. When he and Reyes were in the minors together, they had a foot race based on a clubhouse bet, and Pagan won. Reyes is generally regarded as the fastest kid in the NL.

As for starting in CF, my thinking is in line with Goony's. Not a bad fall back option for Pie. I'd like to see Pagan play some concentrated CF in winter ball or ST.

If Pagan were an everyday player, I'm certain he would produce 20+ doubles and 10+ triples a season. With some excellent coaching, maybe he can learn to steal 40. I'm just not sold on his ability to get on base without a hit, which is a Cubs need and therefore makes him a fallback option.

Pagan's 2006 OPS = .713

Pierre's Career OPS = .729

That tells me two things: Juan Pierre should be nowhere near this team next season, and Pagan's only role should be 5th outfielder or temporary filler until you call up Pie or deal for someone like A. Jones or V. Wells.

btw- I know Pierre steals bases, chases down fly balls, leads off, pressures the pitcher when he's on base. All of that doesn't come close to justifying paying the guy $5-6 mil.+

I would prefer not to have to see Pagan trot out to CF on opening day next year.

I would be ok with it if Lee is at 1st, Ramirez is at 3rd, ARod is at SS and Soriano is at 2nd!

I guess I could tolerate that situation.

I'm rooting for a quick Yankee playoff exit with ARod going 2-20 and a smart Hendry picking up the pieces. I would by far rather have ARod over Manny. Plus, if the Cubs say to ARod he could go back to SS, I bet he'd go to Chicago.

Now you have to do your part and say you've been a Yankee fan since you were a kid and call all the Yankee talk shows and tell them how ARod chokes and you want him gone.

Having one of the best offensive infields of all time would be a good thing.

There are always a couple exceptions to any situation.
