If he doesn't sign Pierre, he'll probably go after someone like Torii Hunter.

vomit

If Hendry could sign Hunter for only one year, he would be a fine stopgap tp Pie as long as he hit lower in the order 6 or 7. He provides great defense and pretty good slugging for a CF. His OBP is avg. He has put up a .800 OPS three of the last 5 seasons, a 4th season he was within .12 pts.

All that being said, I can't imagine him signing a one year deal so there really isn't any circumstance in which I would want Hunter on this team.

You need to try to get Vernon Wells. He is the perfect solution, not only for next year but for the future. He will be 28 when the season begins next year. He should have 3-5 more exceptional years left.

The only question is what will it take to get Wells? For that matter whta would it take to get Andruw Jones?

If they want too much we may have to look at someone like Mike Cameron to play center.

Regarding Torii Hunter from cnnsi.com

There is little doubt that center fielder Torii Hunter will either return to the Twins for $12 million next season or be back for less per season but with a two-year contract.

Take it FWIW of course but I figured I would post it.

Have you seen Wells's stats? Fluke season alert.

Pierre will be signed. Bet on it.

I already have bought his jersey in anticapation of 2007

You could have shelled out a couple more bucks for the real thing.

Thats what I thought at first too. And while his numbers are no doubt up, he has been pretty good in previous years, especially for a CF. He doesn't belong at the top of the order, thats for sure. One important thing to keep in mind. If we are spending a lot for a FA picher and to upgrade 2B, we need a cheap option fo CF. He will only make 5.6M in 2007. Dending on who that 2B is, 5.6 is probably cheap enough to keep some payroll flexibility in filling out the rest of the lineup. As long as we aren't givin up too much in a trade for someone who may be a one year rental, it may be worh it.

Nice. I knew you could get custom name-# jersey's for NFL teams, I didn't

realize you could do if for MLB as well.

Could you imagine the reaction you could get wearing that on Wrigley.

then again most people would probably be to drunk to get it.

The Cubs are on the list of teams Hunter counldnt be traded to, so it seems unlikely that he'd want to sign here as a FA.....at least I hope.

Well, I'd sure as hell rather have Hunter than Pierre. He's a much better defender, and figures to give you an OPS 75-100 points higher.

I'll admit the "4-3" thing is a bit overplayed, but the jersey got a chuckle out of me.

As far as Pierre goes, it's no secret that Hendry wants him back. It's also no secret that the White Sox like him either. Personally, I'd like to see Pie in CF next year, and use our money somewhere else (like on Soriano and Zito) rather than on Pierre. We have a player who is capable of putting up better numbers than Pierre in Pie. Besides, Felix can't get off to a much worse start than Juan did to start the 06 season.

Pierre's production this season (second consecutive year below career average) is basically the same as Scott Podsednik, despite getting 150 more at-bats.

Pierre - 658 at bats, .288 avg, .328 OBP, 80 runs scored, 45 extra base hits, +34 stolen bases/caught stealing, terrible defensively

Pods - 502 at bats, .261 avg, .333 OBP, 84 runs scored, 35 extra base hits, +22 stolen bases/caught stealing, bad enough defensive that Macoviac plays center

It's fairly well-known that the White Sox are looking to replace Podsednik in the off-season while the Cubs are probably going to offer Pierre something in the 3 years, $18 to $21 million range. Is this the difference between the two franchises? One continually looking for ways to improve, while the other content to settle for medicrity (at best).

It seems to me that the Cubs are ready to continue their philosophy of overpaying for mediocrity into the '07 season...and it makes me sick to my stomach to follow this team.

Let's not give credit where it is not due. Kenny Williams was loathed prior to '05. That offseason was based on some huge gambles that paid off (who thought Jermaine Dye would have produced like he has for them?), but KW has had MANY more seasons where he was the laughingstock of the league. Yeah, they won the WS, but they haven't had enough good offseasons to say they have continually looked for ways to improve. They shot themselves in the foot repeatedly prior to last year. Up until last year, KW was a far worse GM than Jim Hendry.

Cough, cough *Alphonso Soriano* cough cough....

Excuse me, I had to clear my throat.

Wells' 2006 season is very similar to his 2003 season. It's not like he hasn't put up these numbers before.

Pie will play CF for the Cubs next year. We won't have the money to re-sign Pierre after extending Aramis, signing Soriano for 2B, and trading for ARod to play SS.

Oh man, if that happened I would crap my pants every hour on the hour. Can you imagine how big a deal ESPN would make of Soriano and ARod being on the same team? But imagine that lineup:

Murton

Soriano

Lee

ARod

Ramirez

Jones

Barrett

Pie

That could be the best 2-5 in history......Why am I even thinking about this? Its just going to make me cry when I see what we really get.

Hey, did you get permission from USSoccer to use his line?

The Angels have expressed interest in A-Rod. The asking price is assumed to be Ervin Santana, Scot Shields, Chone Figgins and a top prospect.

What can the Cubs offer that would closely resemble the talent the Angels would need to give up for A-Rod?

I suppose I could live with Soriano at 2nd if that somehow affected us getting ARod at SS....otherwise, I want nothing to do with him. I'd rather take Marcus Giles coming off of a down year. Soriano is incredibly bad at 2b, and his offense this season is well out of line with his past few years when he played in a better hitters park.

The conversation would probably have to include Zambrano, which would immediately kill the deal for me. I could handle a package of Hill, Howry, Moore (or better yet, Izturis), and Pie for ARod, but I don't think that would be as enticing as the Angels package. On the other hand, I doubt the Angels would make that deal, so I don't know if we'd be competing against such a strong package.

And why would the Yankees trade a franchise player for 3 relative unknowns and an old reliever? The Angels package looks much better.
