Went told how close the Cubs could be to getting first pick in the draft.

Spoiled my appetite. Spoiled any cards bragging rights I MAY have had. (based on the last series who even remembers the other games against the cards???)

Count me in. Sure, I guess having THE #1 pick would be cool, but ended up 2nd or 3rd worst is still going to get you a pretty damn good, if not great, pick. There are many more options along those lines in baseball than other sports.

I agree too. Just given a cursory look at the former number 1 picks of the past 30 years or so, the only names that truly became overwhelming forces in the majors are Alex Rodriguez, Ken Griffey and Chipper Jones. Everyone else was either serviceable or not a factor at all.

Given the development time of baseball, the draft is a real crapshoot. Remember Albert Pujols wasn't picked until the 13th round in 1999. The number one pick? Josh Hamilton.

I think the so-called "obsession" is more of a case of a bunch of Cubs fans who like talking about the Cubs but don't have anything else to talk about with regards to the team. A lot of this talk is pretty clearly a running joke, to me at least. Plus, there's the added theory that the worse the team finishes this year, the bigger the embarrassment, and the more likely an overhaul would become.

that wouldn't seem to be the case in this thread. I don't think the embarassment is any worse if they finish 30th. The Royals are a better team either way.

I don't understand the obsession with the first pick. This isn't the NBA.

I would love to see the Dodgers go on to fail to make the playoffs.

The Cubs have had 2 first picks right? Dunstan and Montenez?

Montanez was 3 overall.

Who went 1-2 that year? That may illustrate the end to finish "ahead" of the D-Rays & Royals.

Thats what I'm rooting for...embarassment and overhaul.

Sadly, I don't think anyone involved in this team feels any sense of shame except for Zambrano who's pissed off he isn't invulnerable.

Why this thread?

The first post has nothing to do with the draft, the 2nd post references the draft position, while at the same time making a joke about spoilers. And the 3rd post again had nothing to do with the draft.

Then you made your post, and then the next 3 people agreed with you.

Doesn't seem like much of an obsession to me. The only reference was in a joke post.

That works for me, except it sort of assumes Hendry just doesn't understand how bad it is.........ergo, if we simply get bad enough, then that little switch in his head will flip and he will do something about it.

Trouble is, I'm starting to think Hendry knows very well how bad it is. He just doesn't have the ability to fix it.
