So I read in Phil Rogers' column this morning that Michael Young and Tom Hicks are still at odds over comments made in the press about Young's leadership on the team. This continues Hicks and, to a lesser extent, Showalter's campaign against their own players.

Given our precarious middle infield situation next year, do you think it would be possible to pry Young away? Maybe a package of Izturis and Marshall?

I think it might take a little more than that, maybe throw in a mid level pitching prospect, but I would love to see Michael Young in Cubbie blue.

Wow, I didn't realize he was 30 years old already. He's put up solid numbers for a SS, last year was a great year for him. He's a career .300/.343/.795 and is sitting at .311/.352/.805 this year. I think it would take a little more than Marshall and Izturis, but it might be worth looking into.

I think all of you are being very optimistic about the package to get Young. Unless Hicks thinks as much of Izturis as Hendry does, Izturis plus Marshall plus a mid level pitching prospect would get a quick "no".

Michael Young's home/road splits:

Home: .348/.383/.520/.903 (avg obp slg ops)

Away: .275/.321/.388/.710

Now, granted, I'd take him over Izturis all day, every day, and twice on sunday, I think those splits are well worth the mention.

Young is a good player, but I'm not sure he'd be worth the cost to get him.

I definitely agree. He is a good player but if you want to be cost conscious couldn't you get a guy like Ray Durham/Julio Lugo/Mark Loretta for a lot cheaper and use the other money/prospects to work on the rotation. I don't see it being that big of a drop off Durham etc to Young.

Whether or not it's a big drop off depends on Durham's production. He's had quite the resurgence this year, but whether or not he can maintain it next year is ify at best. If both Young and Marcus Giles are available, I'd prefer to have Giles to Young.

The only thing out of the ordinary about Durham this year is his slugging, and even if that returns to previous norms he's still an excellent option.

Yeah, but remember all the complaints about Soriano's splits last year? He seems to be doing OK away from Arlington.

Oh definatley. I almost menitoned that in my post. But what works for one doesnt work for all. I still believe his numbers should be put into consideration.

They weren't so out of whack last year.

I've always been a Michael Young fan as well but didn't know/think he was 30 years old.

Who would come at a cheaper price Giles or Young? I'd have to believe Giles.

i think his splits would be ok in chicago! first he is at wrigley which is a great hitters park especially after april. the central is full of hitters parks..milwaukee, cincy and houston are all as good as arlington...so most of his national league games would be in great circumstances!

right now we have a depth of pitching prospects...we will never be able to use hill, marshall, marmol, guzman, mateo and ryu in the majors. they just won't all work out or get the chance. and that goes double if we are looking to sign some pitching. use these guys for trade bait instead of waiting until the are worth nothing.

if we worked this and marshall turned into barry zito it was still worth the chance! we can get a proven product for 3-4 years sometimes you have to gamble.

i disagree with your assesment. hill & marshall will be starting on the big leauge club next year, guzman & marmol need more time in aaa (guzman as a starter & marmol moving to closer) and i think mateo will get a long look as a starter next year too (depending on how prior does health wise). i'm not very high on jkr but i would certainly hope the cubs keep the rest of those guys. if this club is going to win in the near future, they will do so on their starting pitching & bullpen.

I think Giles would be much cheaper to acquire than Young. If the Braves trade Giles, they would have to replace an offensive minded second baseman. Those are easier to find than the Rangers having to replace Young's offense at short.

I can see Texas attempting to make some overhauls this offseason. They have been in contention at mid year the last couple of years, only to fall out of it as the season wore on. With Lee a FA and Teixeira approaching free agency, they may decide it's time to retool things differently.

I'd look into either Giles or Young if they were to become available. Texas will likely want some pitching and may even demand Pie as part of any package for Young. I'm not sure if we'd be willing to pay that much to get him.

my point wasn't that none of them will make but that there is noway all of them will make it or help us...so let's use them to get other pieces. they all have some talent and a lot of potential..if we do what we have done lately and hold'em until they have no or little value what's the use of having them!

we have z...that's a given

prior is still a question mark but he is here as a bonus

if we sign 1-2 starters...we only have 2 spots left for prior, marshall, hill, guzman, mateo, marmol, and ryu...we could have a lot of value out there!

also if we sign zito...i don't see how we can have both hill and marshall. just too similar. they are also probably our most valuable prospects.

which is why the cubs should keep hill & marshall & not sign zito. if they can get schmidt for reasonable years & $, he is the only free agent i might be interested in seeing the cubs getting. otherwise, i hope they give the kids a change to show what they can do inj 2007.
