So we have a spot open on our 25 man roster. Who got called up?
Actually, since it's now Sept. 1, the 25-man roster no longer exists. Rosters have expanded. Since the minor league season is still going on I wouldn't expect anybody to be called up yet; I think it's more likely that some of the injured players will be activated from the DL.

Well, then we have a spot open on our 40 man roster. Since the 15-day DL is included on the 40 man roster, we either have to activate someone on the 60-day DL (Wade Miller perhaps) or just add someone to the 40 man roster.

Now that I think about it, the Cubs will definitely activate Wade Miller. No reason not to.

If we're going to trade backup 1B who we don't want, why not completely and utterly worthless John Mabry instead of actually somewhat productive Phil Nevin?

Because Nevin might have actually given us a player that might possibly do something down the road..Mabry probably wouldn't have. It's not like Nevin's increased production would have done much for our squad the last month of the season-I would have liked to trade both, but Nevin is the better one to deal simply because he is worth more on the market, and they are both worthless to us at this point.

Also, with the return of Lee, the team probably felt that the right handed, power hitting first baseman was a bit redundant and that the lefty bat off the bench was more valuable.

Plus, Mabry is known as a better clubhouse presence than Nevin. If you're not going to win, you might as well hang with nice guys, right?

I think that's likely, but they don't actually HAVE to do anything. 40 is the maximum sie of the roster, but there's no rule that is must be that size. They could leave a spot open for somebody to be protected from the Rule 5 draft in the offseason.

Yeah, but that would be the smart thing to do.

Is there a time table on when the PTBN has to be named? Maybe theres a guy that interests the Cubs, but is up for the rule 5 draft this offseason, and they want to see him pass through.
I think there's a set time limit for announcing a PTBNL, but I don't recall what it is.

Do you think Hendry realized the Phil Nevin had the third best OPS on the team among regulars, and was fifth in OBP? Could that be why he got traded? Will JH ever get a clue or is he forever saber-avert by nature?

Is anyone else annoyed as heck that Hendry continues to claim that these deals were done at the last minute. What does this guy do the rest of the time?

not to defend Hendry but I'm sure he does have alot more going on with his days than trades that go through and stuff we hear about.

That's right.

Those buffets aren't just going to eat themselves.

Considering the fact the team is nowhere near a playoff spot and they have virtually zero chance of making the playoffs, what could Hendry possibly have to do that would be more important than making moves at a crucial and well known deadline that might help the team be better next year?

If Hendry didn't work his schedule to free up time to work deals at the deadline, it's just further proof that he is not cut out for the job. Not that I need any further proof anyway. I'm already convinced he's clueless.

He's saying that Hendry might have been working on other trades, but just ones that didn't go through and so weren't heard about. For all we know, the Twins were interested in other players, and only became interested in Nevin at the last minute-it's not like they called the Cubs, and the Cubs office said that Hendry was out playing golf or something.

Many deals get started right before the deadline-that doesn't mean GM's don't work before that. It's just funny to me-Hendry makes a smart move, and yet he gets villified for the timing of it?

I consider it a no-brainer move.

I agree with that-it's not a move that I'm going to praise Hendry a great deal for (it really depends if he got something valuable for Nevin or not, if not, this is a no-impact trade). I guess I'm just surprised that Hendry makes the move, and then people claim he was lazy just because the Twins and Cubs didn't start discussions until the day of the 31st-when it is just as likely that the Twins didn't need anybody until then, or were looking at other players than that Hendry was automatically lazy in his job.

As was brought up by Dan Bernstein on The Score this evening....

Sosa traded for Hairston

Hairston traded for Nevin

Nevin traded for PTBNL

So in the trickle-down effect, "essentially", Sosa was traded for a PTBNL.

Sure, but the Cubs had Hairston on the team for about 1 1/3 seasons, a significant amount of time.

how does that compare to the two mvp seasons sosa put up in baltimore . . . oh wait. corey has contributed more wins to the orioles than sammy is my guess.
