  1. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Jones. His career stats don't impress me, he looks atrocious in the field, doesn't run the bases, falters against lefties, often looks overmatched at the plate... That being said...the man did seem to get some seriously clutch hits for the team last year, like several go-ahead bombs in close&late situations. I don't believe in the notion of "clutch players" but I don't think I imagined that trend. I guess it could have been luck, or not. Further complicating matters is what I've been hearing about Right field being tougher to play in Wrigley than Center. Any truth to that? If it were up to me I guess I'd dump him simply because watching him throw was too much to stomach, and he's already too much like Floyd and some of our other guys who don't walk. Heck he might even be worth something in return after a decent spring.
  2. Yeah, I'm sorry but Soriano's bat is worth more as a bad 2nd baseman than as a really bad CF.
  3. If Pie split time with Jones, who would start against lefties? Pie is about as bad against lefties as Jones is. Pie's OPS was exactly 200 points higher against righties in Iowa last year. I'd rather have just about anybody than Pagan, though. Ok, Pie starts in Center, with Soriano at 2nd and Izturis tentatively at starting SS. That's how I'd play it.
  4. Not what you want to see out of a closer.
  5. I would just prefer to see Pie split time with Jones while Floyd or Ward act as 1st PH out of the dugout. And with Pagan in the mix someone is going to rot on the bench anyway. Since Ward plays 1b, I think he actually fits better than Pagan or Floyd.
  6. Yeah, and Neifi hit .371/.400/.548 in 62 ABs for us in 2004. Isn't he considered the worst hitter in the majors now? ...... and speaking of non sequetors......... I'm just saying small-sample stats like that don't prove anything, least of all a propensity for "clutchiness". Did Ward just decide to suck on the games he started?

  8. Sounds like he could be the next Lenny Harris.
  9. Except they offer no speed or defense and combine to block two of our best prospects. How exactly is Ward blocking anyone? Care to respond to my statements about what they actually CAN do? You know, something that has been definitively proven rather than merely hoped for? Well, Ward is blocking Cliff Floyd's spot on the bench for one...and looking at these guys' recent history I don't see them as any more proven than top AAA talent. They wouldn't be hanging on if it weren't for experience.
  10. Except they offer no speed or defense and combine to block two of our best prospects.
  11. I was really hoping either he or Cliff Floyd would do for us what Grissom did last year.
  12. I think you can combine these two views to determine that management continues to suck because of the lack of incentive to succeed in the face of unwavering fan support, thereby enabling a good ol' boy mentality among the decisionmakers at the top.
  13. Wood tells a funny story about Grace sharting his pants at 1B and then having to lead off the next inning. Wood then talks about having no interest in starting any time soon because his sore arm troubles were hurting the team. Adds that his weight loss has improved stamina. Couldn't get the rest.
  14. Game predictions: Marquis lacks control, gets pulled in the second inning. E-patt goes 1-1 with a walk and 2 steals. Samardjiza goes another inning of shutout ball. Jaques is taken down for a pinch-runner during the 7th inning and notified of a trade to the Reds.
  15. Mike Fontenot would like to know the same thing...
  16. I didn't RTFA to see what THT surmises, but I can tell you the HBP explosion strongly correlates to a recent trend of umpires calling the strike zone however they see fit, particularly in regards to the outside off-the-plate strike. Since batters must now routinely protect on pitches 3-4 inches off the outside corner, especially when a veteran pitcher "establishes" that as being part of the umpire's strike zone early in the game, they are forced to either crowd the plate or dive out over it as they stride. While Hank Aaron et all never wore the arm and leg pads that the modern sluggers have embraced, they also never had to deal with pitches off the black and at the shins possibly being called a strike depending on the personnel working the field that day. Simply put, if baseball could get back to calling a "rule book" strike zone this HBP explosion would be one problem among many to disappear.
  17. This is pure fantasy where you pick the guys you would like to see have the most success in spring training and win middle infield starting jobs for opening day; i.e. if you were Dusty you would have selected Neifi/Bynum for their "baserunning". The money's on: Izturis/Derosa Jerry's choice: Theriot/Fontenot (as an OBP disciple pushing for youth) Other candidates: Soriano (assumes Pie starts in CF) Patterson Cedeno Womack
  18. uk wrote: I considered that when suggesting a strict 90 pitch count limit for the 1st man. If Z is really on for his first 90 pitches, I've gotta think he's already gotten you through the 7th inning. It's just that you need to pull him at that point so he can recover in four days. No pitcher is going to be as effective the 4th or 5th time through the batting order anyways.
  19. Maybe Glavine was offering an excuse as to why the Braves are so woeful in the playoffs: Their pitchers are too fine-tuned to start a game unless they know their opponent and rest schedule five days in advance. I think a straight-up four-man rotation was the way to go before teams stopped giving up outs at so many positions like they once did. Nowadays I don't think you can coast through innings against anyone.
  20. I wonder how much better a SP can be if given days to prepare for an appearance where he will just air it out over 4-5 innings. I think Brad Penny talked about that being a luxury after his impressive All-star appearance. I guess you could basically script a couple of pitchers to appear in each game in advance.
  21. How's this for non-traditional? Maybe they could do some sort of 4x2 man rotation with a strict pitch count of 90 for everybody. Day 1 -- Zambrano/Marshall Day 2 -- Lilly/Marquis Day 3 -- Hill/Miller Day 4 -- Prior/Rusch Of course those back end spots would all be open for consideration, but it seems it would help save the arms and negate any L/R lineup stacking. Yes I know, some of their agents would get pissed about the stat-sheet.
  22. Well my impression is that Hendry must have changed his mind after seeing Minaya take charge on it with Reyes. Everything I read last week said Soriano got the go-ahead. Even that article implied he was still considering playing this winter.
  23. Call me crazy (and you will), but I think you've got to count on Prior as the #2 starter. The recovery period is over. Either he can pitch or he can't. If his arm is hurty, send him down or DFA. If not, run him out for 200 innings. If he's lost his control, demote or DFA. None of this #5 starter garbage. He's shown he's an Ace, but if his arm is shot you can't just make him a #5. And for some more blasphemy, is Wood ever going to start again? Has he lost interest in the role? Are the doctors saying his arm will fall off if he ever goes 9 innings? Again, if his arm is good he should pitch like he used to, if it's shot...to the scrap-heap! He's never going to embrace the role of middle relief, but does he want to make himself a closer? (serious question) That would be fine too, but if it's a lingering injury concern I'd start over with a fresh arm. To summarize: These guys aren't marginal pitchers. If they're healthy but no longer great then they're flamed out so just cut your losses.
  24. He signed the huge contract, then asked permission to play 75 games +playoffs of winter ball in the Dominican league before the start of Spring Training, and Hendry said "Sure! I'm not gonna stop you!"
