Saw this on Red Sox.com:

Various reports Thursday had the 43-year-old hurler traded to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Minor League catcher George Kottaras, who was hitting .233 with two homers and 13 RBI with Triple-A Portland. He is considered a defensive specialist.

Kottaras for David Wells? Not sure I'd do that if I were San Diego.

I wouldn't either. Kottaras is way too much to pay for David Wells.

If Theo pulls this off, he's a magician.

Varitek buys Kottaras a full season in AAA, and by 2008, Boston has a nice young backstop ready to go full time.

The Padres add a hefty lefty who does little to help them ensure anything more than a divisional series sweep at the hands of the Mets.

Kottaras is a decent defensive catcher with high-end onbase skills displayed in the minors, what a shock that Theo is attracted to him

And what a shock that Hendry wasn't attracted to him when he traded Maddux and Walker.

Does it seem like David Wells goes to and from the same teams all the time??

I think the only team he hasn't gone back to is the White Sox...

Actually, according to the Boston Herald, Kottaras is viewed as more than "decent" defensively. He's a defensive specialist who happens to get on base at a very good clip.

Maddux and Walker for Kottaras and Chase Headley would have been a nice deal.

The BA prospect handbook didn't seem to be that high on Kotteras's defense. They didn't make him out to be a liability, but there were multiple negatives they pointed out(size and throwing arm IIRC, don't have the book in front of me) that gave me the impression they thought of him as an average defender.

MLB.com has now picked up the rumor, but stated it verbatim from what the Boston Herald reported.

Defensive specialist? Ummm, okay.

Based on what I remember reading on here, isn't Kottaras supposed to be a pretty good prospect? And he's hitting in the .230's? Maybe I'm thinking of someone else, but he doesn't sound that good to me.

he's had 64 ABs at AAA. he had a 845 OPS at AA before his promotion. He hasn't posted a sub-800 OPS in his minor league career yet. Before this year, he had a 392 career minor league OBP.

I think there's something to the rumor; I read somewhere that Wells was scratched from his scheduled start today.

Tavarez is starting for the Sox. I think the deal to the Padres is done, but they can't send Kottaras (at least not now) since he's on the 40-man and would never clear waivers. Probably going to be a PTBNL.

That's not Julian Tavarez you're talking about, is it?

Yes indeed.

I would have happily taken Kottaras instead of Izturis for Maddux. I'm starting to despise Jim Hendry.

The question is, were they willing to do this a month ago? This seems like a move purely out of desperation and most teams aren't this desperate in July. Still a gosh awful trade for San Diego but I'm not sure this was available to Hendry.

When's the last time Tavarez made a start?

I sincerely don't think that BOTH parties have to clear waivers. I think that's a misconception that alot of people here have. Clearly, Kottaras wouldn't have made it through, so there has to be something else at play here. I think we have a general misunderstanding of the rule.
