I think there's something to the rumor; I read somewhere that Wells was scratched from his scheduled start today.

Tavarez is starting for the Sox. I think the deal to the Padres is done, but they can't send Kottaras (at least not now) since he's on the 40-man and would never clear waivers. Probably going to be a PTBNL.

I sincerely don't think that BOTH parties have to clear waivers. I think that's a misconception that alot of people here have. Clearly, Kottaras wouldn't have made it through, so there has to be something else at play here. I think we have a general misunderstanding of the rule.

that doesn't make sense.

they made it a PTBNL. the PTBNL can be anyone on the roster that's NOT on the major league roster. he doesn't have to pass through waivers.

the PTBNL is probably an agreement between epstein and towers on kottaras.

But, it ISN'T a PTBNL... it's Kottaras. Already named, and already shipped. Nowhere is it being reported that it's Wells for a PTBNL.

Players who still have options do not have to clear waivers in order for action to be taken on their contracts (e.g. to be sent down or, in this case, dealt). For instance, for the Cards Duncan or Wainwright could have been traded without ever having been subjected to waivers.

edit - I might be wrong. From rotoworld.com:

However, since Kottaras is on the 40-man roster, it might be that he won't be officially included until after the season. He'd have to make it to Boston on waivers to be traded now, and despite how far the Red Sox have fallen, they still have a much better record than the Devil Rays.

no, it's a PTBNL. look at rotoworld or something.

I would have happily taken Kottaras instead of Izturis for Maddux. I'm starting to despise Jim Hendry.

The question is, were they willing to do this a month ago? This seems like a move purely out of desperation and most teams aren't this desperate in July. Still a gosh awful trade for San Diego but I'm not sure this was available to Hendry.

well, then hendry should have hung on to maddux until a decent prospect became available.

If he didn't like Izturis and just took him to get something then yes he should have waited, but a deal was presented where we got someone of value and Hendry felt that Izzy was of adequate value for Maddux. I'm not defending acquiring Izturis right now, what I'm defending is that the Kottaras deal may have not been available to Hendry at the point when he made the deal. Maybe he still takes Izzy, maybe not, only he can answer that.

When is the Izturis contract up? IMO the only way the Cubs could trade Neifi is when they got a "suitable" replacement.

Izturis's contract runs through 2007 with a team option for 2008. I agree with you that if Izturis had not been traded to the Cubs, Neifi would still be on this team and Robinson would still be with the Tigers, not the Cubs.

i don't know what's worse, not waiting to receive full value on maddux or believing that izturis (one of the worst full time hitters that the big leagues have seen in a very long time) "was of adequate value" for him.

if either is the case, hendry should be fired immediately.
