he's two years from free agency and already headed for a big arbitration payday and whether pirates fans like it or not, won't be part of their next championship. Hendry needs to get creative and sign a great player in his prime in a need position.

I would trade Pie and any 2 pitcing prospects right now for Bay.

btw..a year for now...Bay is gonna really regret that contract he signed.

He would be looking at 12mil a seaosn easily on the market right now.

Except he wouldn't be on the market if he didn't sign that deal.

If I'm not mistaken he would be looking at FA after the 07 season.

So he would have been dealt in July of 07 to the Yankees/Red Sox and inked his new deal a few weeks later.

Either way he took some terrible advice from an agent.

Nope, he wouldn't have been a FA until after the '09 season. He had 2+ years of service time going into this year.

You're mistaken. 2009 would have been his 1st FA year.

Gotcha. Bay is gonna be one of baseball biggest bargains for a while...gotta give props to the Pit GM on that one.

Bay is a franchise type player. I think it will take more than Pie and pitching

prospects.

The time to get Bay was back when he was an undervalued prospect in the Padres' system. I liked him a lot back then - and believe it or not, I liked him based just on his stats... I never saw him play.

so instead of the cubs getting lee (who would only cost $), you would trade the farm for bay (who isn't that much better than lee)?? not a very good move imo. why not sign lee to play rf, trade jones and have an OF of murton, pie & lee. bay is very good but imo the cubs would be insane to trade pie & their 2 top pitching prospects for him (even if by some impossible chance he would be available).

I think this has been said, but, just to be clear:

Bay is signed through his arbitration years. He has not given up any free agency at all.

One of the ironies in life is that the Pirates wanted Nady and not Bay, and settled for him. Obiously we have both right now. Nady's been hitting comfortably over .300 since we got him. I'm wondering if the reuniting with bay has helped this at all.

but lee is available and bay is not. and if bay were available he would cost the farm in prospects and lee would only cost $.

Obviously that's true, but you're the one who said Bay "isn't much better than Lee".

While we getting Bay instead of Lee, why not get Miquel Cabrera, Brian McCann, ARod, Peavy, and Papelbon since those are all just as likely to be traded as Bay.

Sweet! Get Hendry on it!!!

i guess i should qualify that statement. for what bay would cost in prospects, his .950 ops isnt much better than lee's .888. ie i would rather the cubs have lee, pie & their top 2 pitching prospects than bay.

I would say Cabrera is much more likely to get traded than Bay. Bay is signed on the cheap, Cabrera is not. He's at the stage in his career that Pujols was at when he signed his monster deal, and he's putting up comparable numbers. Miguel's list of similar batters at this age is littered with hall of famers (Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson, Mickey Mantle) and future hall of famers (Griffey and Pujols). He is putting up these numbers in a pitchers park.

Jeter and Soriano got over $5m in their first forays into the arbitration process, and both were years ago, while neither was as good as Miggy.

I say he could easily get $7+ million in arbitration, and might flirt with the $10m mark set by Soriano last year. A good agent should be able to get him a deal that comes close to what Pujols signed in 2004, 7/$100.

I would think his agent would want to find a trade. And I would think Florida would still want to keep costs as low as possible. Give them solid young players/prospects still a couple years from arbitration, and throw in some cash and I bet they'd deal.

And the Cubs are exactly the type of team that should do whatever it takes to make such a deal.

are they? How do you figure Papelbon will be traded with the Red Sox payroll? ARod is much more expensive, older, and does not play LF. Peavy would be a nice addition but pitchers are too risky to make a huge investment. Cabrera would be a great addition and is far more likely to be traded than Bay.

What exactly is your point anyway? You wouldn't want Bay or a Baylike player? I'm not entirely certain why people feel inclined to make sarcastic comments in these threads - the fact that Bay is under contract through 2009 is now well documented. That doesn't change the fact that he would be a perfect fit for the Cubs and Hendry should be on the lookout for how to obtain such players.
