Walrond will be the 13th different pitcher to start for the Cubs this year.
Actually, it's 14. There are 12 pitchers currently shown in the cubs.com statistics with at least one start, plus Maddux and Walrond who are not shown (Maddux because he's been traded, Walrond because he hasn't pitched at the major league level yet this year). It's so ridiculous even the Cubs own web site can't keep track of how many starters there have been. :D

Why are we adding guys like Walrond and O'Malley to the 40 man?

I swear, if we get raped in the Rule V again, I'm gonna be livid. These guys better get DFA'd after the season.

I have to ask. Why?

Are you referring to my comment?

No. I'm referring to Walrond starting tomorrow.

It was him or Jerome Williams after Ryu was used a few days ago. The Cubs want Sean Marshall and Wade Miller to get one more rehab start each.

As disappointed as I am with Williams, I would rather have seen him than Walrond, and that's without figuring in the 40 man implications...

I too would rather see Williams start since he's already on the 40-man roster (it's only one meaningless game; who cares if he gets lit up). By adding Walrond to the roster, he'd need to be exposed to waivers in order to take him back off during the offseason. I think it's much more likely that he'd be claimed on waivers than it would be for someone else to take him in the Rule 5 draft if he's kept off the roster. So basically, I think they're increasing the chances of losing him for the sake of one meaningless game.

Of course, if they don't think he has a major league future and are planning to release him in the offseason anyway, then it doesn't really matter.

I doubt they will care much if somebody claims Walrond in the offseason. He is turning 30 before next year-if he's not ready to pitch in the major leagues now, it's doubtful he will ever be.

What ever happened to Bobbie Brownlie?

He's been awful at AA as a reliever and was nearly demoted to A+ Daytona this season. The only reason he wasn't demoted was due to an injury to another reliever (Rocky Cherry). It's a shame he lost all that velo on his FB.

His not-so-good 2006 stats.

I would have preferred seeing Jerome too, but I honestly don't care that much if the Cubs lose Les Walrond this offseason.

I like to think of myself as pretty decent on knowing my Cubs minor leaguers, and have never heard of Walrond.

That's not a terrible thing for you..he's just a career minor leaguer that has bounced around. He was with St. Louis till 03, then went to KC, then he went to Florida's organization in 05, then to the Cubs in 06. He has a 3.83 ERA in Iowa this year at age 29.

Gotta say that this is more offensive terminology to me then most swear words.

I'm happy that Walrond got the call for tomorrow night's game. :D The Cubs really don't have any good options for tomorrow night's game. I've seen Walrond pitch in Iowa and IMO he is one of the nicest guys on the team. It is not like the Cubs were going to protect him over the offseason anyways, and at 29 it will be pretty special for him to make his major league debut. Here is hoping that he can make the most of his start.

It's his Cubs debut, but not his major league debut. He had a cup of coffee with Kansas City in 2003.

Thanks, either way it will be his first Major League start. I'm sure it is going to be pretty special for him and couldnt' have happened to a nicer guy.

And at 29, Walrond supasses Rich Hill as the oldest member of the starting rotation. Do you think Dusty's torn about calling the oldest member of his rotation a rookie?
