Question for the experts here that may have an obvious answer---why don't they keep an actual clock for stoppage time during the game and then put that exact amount on the clock? Seems so simple and smart and then avoids controversy (for the most part).

I'm guessing the same reason you don't argue balls and strikes in baseball. It's tradition. There is a rough system to it and people are used to they way it works. Pre-1990ish, they wouldn't even alert teams how much extra time they were getting. They just kept playing until the whistle sounded whether it was 1 minute or 5 mins.

stopwatches have been around for a long time. magic lasers that can call balls and strikes have been around for like ten years.

In honor of the Argentina-Netherlands semifinal.

I'm hoping for either Brasil v Argentina or Germany v The Netherlands in the final, if only for the intensity of both rivalries.

The former could be boring as hell, the latter would probably be the better game.

Argentina is very good at killing a game if they get an early lead (as was demonstrated yesterday) - granted, my guys didn't find any answers and paid the price for one bad error.

Yedlin to Liverpool and Roma rumors are picking up. Any other clubs not owned by Americans? Either way, two champions league clubs is a good start.

That's funny. I wonder what the basis of the appeal is.

"Sorry, our captain didn't mean to be a moron when he picked up the yellow"

Don't see how Brazil wins today. I think Germany dominates the ball with Brazil getting very few chances on goal.

Sorry to break it to you, the game is tomorrow.

Only one thing mars my enjoyment of watching the World Cup, and it's the absence of one small word. Just a tiny qualifier in a statistic that really should be corrected as our men's team continues to gain respect internationally. So I ask the American commentators, please stop announcing that Landon Donovan is the "all-time U.S. leading goal scorer." He is not. With 57 international goals, he's not even in the Top Five.

The all-time U.S. leading goal scorer is Abby Wambach, with 167 goals, followed by Mia Hamm (158), Kristine Lilly (130), Michelle Akers (105) and Tiffeny Milbrett (100). In fact, Abby Wambach is the all-time leading goal scorer in the world, among all soccer players, male or female.

Haha

I love the women's team and I am proud of players like Abby Wambach, but man, that column is willfully wrong-headed at almost every turn. Even her concession to give the MNT credit, calling the accomplishment of getting out of the group 2x in a row "extraordinary" is completely wrong.

Even if you want to be all social justice warrior about it, watching a World Cup that involved a country wasting billions of dollars that it didn't have to waste that could have gone toward infrastructure, riots for a year leading up to the tournament, favela's being bulldozed, half the country living in abject poverty while said country's government wastes said billions, rife corruption and bribery and what not......but the missing noun in front of "All Time Scoring Leader" is what grinds your gears? That's the thing preventing you from enjoying the World Cup?
