Italy scored, so one would think Spain and Croatia have to start being more aggressive.

Croatia yes; Spain goes through when they draw.

I'd imagine Spain would want to win the group, though, and Italy wins the group with a 0-0 Spain/Croatia draw.

I believe I read that Spain wins the group with a win OR a draw, regardless of the other results.

Edit:

Spain advance if: A win or a draw doesn't just guarantee that Spain are onto the quarterfinals, but that they are the Group C winners. They will also advance even if they lose to Croatia so long as Ireland win or draw against Italy.

That's wrong. http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/news/newsid=1818000.html

If Spain and Croatia draw 0-0 and Italy wins, Italy wins group C on tiebreaker c, most goals in games between tied teams (2 to 1 each for SPA/CRO) and Spain advances on overall goal differential ahead of Croatia.

EDIT: If Spain and Croatia draw 1-1, Spain wins the group if Italy doesn't win by at least 5 goals, and Croatia would advance if Italy doesn't win by 3. If Spain and Croatia draw 2-2, Spain wins the group and Croatia finishes second.

Spain really playing with fire here playing so conservatively. Sure, a 0-0 draw puts them through, but they're one goal allowed from being out.

That's what I get for using SBnation for soccer related insight.

Reading the Guardian's minute-by-minute of these games has been a blast, as well. They absolutely skewer Spain and the indulgent 7909 passes completed per game with no real shooting thing.

Still not over. Croatia still only needs one.

This tournament has been great so far in terms of things going down to the wire in each group.

-Group A went down to the last second for both games. If Russia scored, they move on and Greece goes home. If Poland scored, the Czechs go from winning the group to going home.

-In Group B, Netherlands wasn't really done until Portugal went up 2-1 in the 74th minute. Even then, Denmark had a chance to win the group and bounce Germany with a goal.

-In Group C, Italy didn't lock up the win until the 90th minute (an Ireland goal would have sent them home) and a goal by Croatia at the end (when down 1-0) would have sent Italy home even with the 2-0 win.

So the earliest any team has been guaranteed to advance (barring a miracle comeback) is the 80th minute and in two of the groups, a goal in the last seconds could have completely changed the teams who would advance.

If you ever hear an English fan bitch about bad luck or getting screwed by refs, slap them.

Can't wait to stream 5Live after this one. The drunks will be out in force.

England v Italy in a Quarter final now (could be a boring as hell game or the best matchup we see in the Quarters). Spain v France probably won't be as interesting. Germany is going to beat he piss out of Greece. The Czech vs Portugal matchup could be very entertaining.

Amsterdam was more fun when the English were playing rather than the Dutch this year. Wish I was there tonight.

Holy god, this England team is a disgrace. They didn't deserve that win at all. They have a Germany 2002 vibe about them.

No more bitching about Lampard's "goal" again, ever.

I think they will beat Italy but get abused by Germany in the Semis. Joe Hart has to become Oliver Khan. If we get that matchup and a Spain/Portugal match up we might have the perfect tournament.

Portugal has the longest active streak of appearances in the Euro knockout stage with five. Netherlands had made it six straight times prior to this year.
