Donovan out for Saturday. No replacement.

He must have realized that South Africans sometimes sound like Germans, wet himself, and then decided he'd rather stay in the US and play a pickup game in Malibu.

CHICAGO (November 13, 2007) — The 2007 CONCACAF Champion U.S. Men’s National Team will host Mexico on Feb. 6 at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. The game will be shown live on ESPN2 and Univision at 8 p.m. CT, and fans can follow online via ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker.

The last USA vs. Mexico match in Reliant Stadium drew a passionate sellout crowd of 69,582 fans on May 8, 2003 and remains the largest home crowd for the U.S. Men’s National Team this decade.

Pretty much is a road match as the Mexican crowd will likely outdraw the Americans.

Yeah, but it's at Reliant and the fans are really tame. i was at the one in 2003, US fans were outnumbered 12:1 or so.

Pretty much like the Gold Cup final this summer.

Then make $1 beer night, and the fans will get a little rough :-).

seriously, how many times can the u.s. play mexico? mix it up a little bit.

I'd rather play the semi-talented hacks from Mexico over and over again than the untalented hacks that make up most of the rest of CONCACAF.

why does it have to be concacaf teams? i'm sure its easier for transportation and whatnot, but why not go against some of the big boys in europe and south america?

I agree that we play Mexico way too often now, but in this particualr instance it's understandable.

-Altidore, Adu, and Szetela all need to be exposed to the matchup, and better to to it in Texas in Feburary than at the Azteca in May when it really matters.

-We're not a top 10 team, so we shouldn't really be jaunting over to play Holland, Italy, or Germany or anything like that just yet. EVen if you play a team like that and get a result, it's misleading. I'd like to see more games against teams like Sweden, Switzerland, England, and COMNEMBOL (or whatever the hell it is) teams get scheduled, but after Brazil and Argentina you have a boatload of crap not terribly different from CONCACAF opposition.

Having said all that, Mexico is going to beat us here sooner or later. I hope the USSF and USMNT fans are mentally prepared for that letdown.

I am not and will not be prepared. We will win every game against Mexico from now to the end of time.

Danny Szetela officially became the first non-keeper, US International La Liga player when he started and played 66 minutes for Santander yesterday. 0-0 draw.

Hopefully this becomes the norm because he turned down Newcastle and Roma for Santander, presumably for more playing time and playing style.

Oh speaking of La Liga, Ives Gallarcep (the man in the know for all things NYRB) offers this snippet.

Real Madrid is after Jozy Altidore. That is the word emerging from Spain today as leading sports daily AS is reporting that Real is scouting the Red Bulls striker.

The lead to the article says it all. "Real Madrid is searching the international market for players who are young, talented and inexpensive, all qualities found in forward Jozy Altidore, the grand sensation of MLS.

WOW.

This winter's transfer window was always going to feature European teams taking a look at Altidore but now, with Real Madrid in the picture and Bruce Arena out as head coach, the chances that Altidore is sold this winter have increased tremendously. I always thought Altidore would play the 2008 MLS season before going abroad but there is mounting evidence to suggest that he will be leaving the Red Bulls come January.

Ooooo...Jozy @ Real=gooooooooood news.

Also, I've been super busy lately. What time and channel is the South Africa game on tomorrow?

I have no desire to see Jozy in MLS next season. There is really no point unless he is afraid of being home sick. But Real Madrid, wow. It would be cool to see him playing for them, but only to get buried under talent. Unless they buy him and loan him out for the next 2-3 years.

I still want to see him go to Liverpool and play along side Torres. He will be better than Crouch and Dirk Kuyt within 2 years.

6 a.m. Pacific Time on FSC. I would assume there's a repeat on later in the day as well.

Adu blew a great chance at the end of the half, but that was a nice opportunity that unfolded there.

Saw my first soccer game in its entirety last night, live no less. Went up to Loyola to see UIC beat UW - Milwaukee in the Horizon League semi-finals.

Soccer fans in the Chicago area should really check out UIC, they have a real good program going (were ranked in the top 10 last year in the nation), and some people think this is actually a better team. Insane defense with non being seniors either. I think UWM only had 1 or 2 legitimate shots to score.

We only have a few fans that come out, but they make it a fun time. Though if the Milwaukee fans were on there toes they really could have thrown the "Madison rejects" chant right back at them.

Horizon League finals on Sunday at 1:30 at Loyola - UIC vs. UW Green Bay.

In Euro 2008 news, Israel scored a 90th minute goal to beat Russisa which means England just need a tie agains Croatia to advance. Italy beat Scotland to move on as well.

Also in the 90th in minute. Cruel result for Scotland.

Omar Golan is one beloved Jew in England today.

As for Jozy at Madrid, it would be a while before he got consistent playing time, but I'll take him training with Real over playing 90 in every MLS game every day of the week.
