The USSF actually did something right for a change:

I don't have a link, but the US is now scheduled to play Mexico- in Mexico City, at the Azteca, on September 9th 2007.

I love it. Our players need to play friendlies in hostile Central American enviroments. Between Copa America, Catalonia, Switzerland, Sweden and this date (and 9/12 is also a FIFA international date), all of the players that we need to qualify for 2010 get a dry run in the most hostile, difficult enviorments possible.

This will be an invaluable experience, even if we lose, because we'll be back there in 12 or so months when we get to the Hex (final stage of CONCACAF qualifying) and Bradley and the young Nats will know what to expect.

And imagine if we beat them there.

I long for the day we beat Mexico in their stadium. I can't even imagine what the reaction would be down there. It would be truly glorious.

I fear for the safety of the US players if they beat them.

Excellent point.

They will be too busy lynching their coach and own team should the US win at Azteca. It honestly might not even take the mexican federation an hour to fire the coach after that game.

So the Copa America rosters came out today. Argentina is sending Messi, Mascherano, Tevez, Riquelme, and pretty much every other good player they have.

The US is sending a C team.

We play Argentina in the 1st match.

That game is going to be a beating of ridiculous proportions. I wouldn't be shocked if it was 7-0.

Here's the roster:

13 Bornstein, Jonathan D 5'9" 145 11/07/84 7/1 Los Alamitos, Calif. Chivas USA (MLS)

4 Boswell, Bobby D 6'2" 185 03/15/83 2/0 Tampa, Fl. D.C. United (MLS)

7 Califf, Danny D 6'1" 175 03/17/80 14/1 Orange, Calif. Aalborg BK (Denmark)

19 Clark, Ricardo M 5'10" 150 05/10/83 6/0 Jonesboro, Ga. Houston Dynamo (MLS)

12 Conrad, Jimmy D 6'2" 185 02/12/77 21/0 Temple City, Calif. Kansas City Wizards (MLS)

10 Davies, Charlie F 5'10" 160 06/25/86 1/0 Manchester, N.H. Hammarby IF (Sweden)

3 DeMerit, Jay D 6'0" 185 12/04/79 3/0 Green Bay, Wis. Watford FC (England)

5 Feilhaber, Benny M 5'9" 150 01/19/85 7/1 Irvine, Calif. Hamburger SV (Germany)

11 Gaven, Eddie M 6'0" 165 10/25/86 3/0 Hamilton, N.J. Colombus Crew (MLS)

8 Gomez, Herculez F 5'10" 165 04/06/82 0/0 Las Vegas, Nev. Colorado Rapids (MLS)

23 Guzan, Brad GK 6'4" 210 09/09/84 1/0 Homer Glen, Ill. Chivas USA (MLS)

9 Johnson, Eddie F 6'0" 180 03/31/84 26/10 Palm Coast, Fla. Kansas City Wizards (MLS)

16 Kljestan, Sacha M 6'1" 150 09/09/85 1/0 Huntington Beach, Calif. Chivas USA (MLS)

21 Mapp, Justin M 5'10" 140 10/18/84 5/0 Brandon, Miss. Chicago Fire (MLS)

15 Moor, Drew D 6'0" 170 01/15/84 0/0 Dallas, Texas FC Dallas (MLS)

25 Nguyen, Lee M 5'8" 149 10/07/86 1/0 Richardson, Texas PSV Eindhoven (Holland)

14 Olsen, Ben M 5'8" 140 05/03/77 34/6 Middletown, Pa. D.C. United (MLS)

6 Pearce, Heath D 5'10" 175 08/13/84 6/0 Modesto, Calif. FC Nordsjælland (Denmark)

20 Twellman, Taylor F 5'11" 170 02/29/80 24/6 St. Louis, Mo. New England Revolution (MLS)

2 Wynne, Marvell D 5'9" 171 05/08/86 0/0 Poway, Calif. Toronto FC (MLS)

There's a name missing from that roster, BTW, that infuriates me. Try and guess who.

Maybe he asked for some time off.

It's neither Clint nor Landon. I get why neither are playing. Dempsey is getting married in July, and LA didn't want to release Landon with Beckham on his way.

There are actually 4 players I'm pissed about, now that I have time to look at it.

Sweet.

Hell, I just noticed that Jimmy Conrad was born in the town I've lived in the past 16 years and went to my biggest rival HS...all because I looked at USS's post. (I did know he went to UCLA, though.)

Ding! Ding!

First 'big' move in the off-season looks likely.

very interesting move. as a chelsea supporter i don't know if i should be happier that henry will be out of the prem or i should be disappointed that he's on barca, whom chelsea inevitably will see somewhere in the champions league.

not only does barca have eto'o, up front, but they also have a disgruntled eidur gudjohnsen. i always liked him at chelsea but he's not happy with his limited minutes in spain. i wouldn't be surprised to see him moved to arsenal or manchester united this summer.

also, an absolutely embarassing roster for copa america. i was really excited to see the u.s. go up against really good competition, but sending the c team will get them destroyed and not show us much of anything.

The biggest winners in the Henry to Barca move were Spurs and Reading. Either now has an excelent chance of finishing 4th and getting a crack at the Champions League.

RE: the Copa roster, I know the U-20 World Cup is forthcoming, but I would have liked to seen Adu, Altidore and Ferrari on the CA roster. Those 3 are the future, and will likely contribute in 2010. Adu, in particular, should have been selected simply because I'd like to get him capped for the senior team ASAP. I'm also suprised that Beasley and Oneywu aren't going, since they still don't have a club for next season, unless OSV ad Standard Leige want them back. There are guys going to CA who don't really deserve a callup. Gaven doesn't even start for Columbus, yet he's going to CA? Herculez Gomez is never going to be an option up front. Marvelle Wynne? Really?

That said, it's going to be fun watching Feilhaber, Nguyen and Davies play in a pressure situation. It's just too bad that the players around them (especially the back line) are going to be poor.

Why no Tim Howard?

My best guess as to why Bocanegra, Dempsey and Howard aren't going is that Bradley and USSF wanted to let them go back to Fulham and Everton for preseason training. They're probably thinking it's better to build a good relationship with their clubs so that when we need them for a qualifier, we can get them released.

I'm not so sure its so bad for Arsenal. They had Henry out for a lot of last season, and didn't do all that bad. He's got sciatica, so his fitness will always be a concern, and his playing has made him look more like Thierry Ennui than ever before. Better the sixteen mil now than nothing later, isn't it?

Cisse doesn't look to be joining OM, either, which is good.

True, but do they have a first class striker ready to replace him? Is Theo Walcott the answer there?

$16m is nice to have, but they need to make sure they have an offense or it's back to old-school, Lucky/Boring Arsenal.

Anything that makes it more likely Arsene Wenger will cry every week makes me a happy man.

Being in the same room with Wenger and Mourinho would be terrible. Why are there so many unlikeable coaches in the EPL.

As far as I see it they need the money after this season's Euro failure. There's a reason it was known as Cash-burden Grove while they were building it.

Does anyone know why Donovan got to retake the penalty kick at the end of the El Salvador game? The announcers said - and this is what it looked like - that Bradley ran in before the ball was kicked. I thought that when your player ran in too early, you essentially forfeited the PK much line a lane violation in basketball.

Nope. If they score its a rekick. If they don't score, its an indirect free kick aagainst the kicker's side where the infringement occured.

Thanks for the clarification. I should have known that.

rumor going around is that Beasley is heading to Rangers in the SPL. solid club, even though they've been dominated by celtic the past few years.

for those going to today's match, have fun.

Pretty soon I'll be off to the game.

Suckers.

I can't wait to yell obscenities at Oswaldo Sanchez.

It should be pretty nice out this afternoon. Partly cloudy, but temps only in the upper 70s.

Heading out to Soldier Field now..... sounds like it will be a majority crowd supporting Mexico, so we need to be loud!
