Why is it that seemingly half the teams in CONCACAF are potshot artists like this? Which country was it that spent our last qualifier trying to take out our players the entire time?

because they have no scoring/passing talent. it's the best way for a mediocre team to limit their chances against and not overexpose themselves. That and clogging the midfield.

Gotta love Wynalda bitching about the Mexican ref continuously

That ref sucked donkey vomit.

By the way, if I was in that game, I would have found a reason to either knock #8 in the nuts or I'd have elbowed him in the solar plexus. Hard. Possibly both.

I'm generally a clean player. In fact, I've never gotten a card in my life. Granted, that's because I've played keeper and forward since I was 15, but still, that's ridiculous. Even though I play clean, I get pretty hopping mad on occasion -- like throwing the ball in a player's face. That would have been one of those times.

Eddie Johnson is terrible. His continued presence on the US roster makes me want to move to Canada and change my name.

Johnson was simply awful. I mean, awful. Can we bring Clint Mathis back?

I'm all for that. I liked Mathis, still do.

The U-20 team got kind of a rough draw for the U-20 World Championship this summer. Poland, Korea, and Brazil.

First row on the aisle in 152 (behind the north goal) for me. If I can't go or if the US doesn't make it, I'll at least be able to easily sell them.

Did you get through in time for first row seats on the 50, Seth?

I didn't but my buddy Mike did. We're right next to you in row 1 of section 152.

I also have a bunch of seats for row 10 that i'll probably end up selling.

Ah. What seats? I've got 1 and 2. If I can't find anyone wanting to go, it's possible I could offer you up the other ticket if you know someone. Won't know until close to the game, though.

Ah. I believe there are 18 seats in each section in the endzone, so you're a few seats away from the aisle on the other side center of the goal:

By the way, I just pulled up seats in the 2nd row of 123. They're rather slow moving tickets.

Seth, if you managed to score good tickets I'll buy them. I wasn't able to be at my computer for the sale this morning.

As far as last night's game, it's clear that US players still have no idea how to break down a packed defense.

Weird. For some reason, no 200, 300, or 400 level seats are coming up for either day. Wonder what's going on.

Nice. 8 of the Fire's first 10 games will either be on CSNC (6) or ESPN2 (2). And for those with FSC, another will be on there. Only 1 will be on HDNet.

The opener is 4/7 at 7:30 against the Revolution on CSNC and Direct Kick.

Not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread yet or not, but the MLS All-Stars will also play Celtic. That's on 7/19.

In a not-so-popular move (understatement), Cuauhtémoc Blanco is expected to sign with the Fire on Tuesday, but won't be with the team until late April or May.

The reports don't look to be April Fool's Day-related.

Let's hope for everyone's sake that he lives up to whatever contract he gets.

Big mistake.

He'll actually be introduced Monday night. Not only that, but the Fire will be holding a fan greeting with him. That'll be interesting.

Am I completely off base in having a little bit off hope that at 34 years of age he's grown up just a bit?

I think so. Aside from being a world class tool, he's also the benificiary of some very deferential treatment by refs and opposing defenses in the Mexican league. He's allowed space he won't be afforded by MLS defenders. He's a very, very old 34, with a history of divisiveness and troublemaking in the locker room. It's going to be tough to like watching him play.

He's a high risk, little reward player with no pace and who won't have space to screw around like he gets for Club America. If the Fire really wanted to fill their DP spot with a Mexican forward, they should have pushed for Borgetti, who's style of play would translate much better to MLS.

And for the record, I don't think he makes it through the season. He'll either be released/suspended or he'll have a meltdown and quit.

Did you ever hear back from the guy with the USA-Mexico shirts?

Gerrard puts Liverpool up 1-0 with a superb header in the 27th minute.

Blast. I forgot. But yeah, great header from quite a bit out.

I wasn't going to get one of the shirts. I'll just wear my Fire jersey to the Gold Cup.

And Liverpool has all but secured a spot in the Champions League semifinals as they're up 3-0 on the road to PSV. There is no way PSV is going to go into Anfield and post a 3-0 win next Wednesday.

Don't think this has been posted yet:

NEW YORK (AP) - CONCACAF will introduce a Champions League in 2009 as its main club competition, replacing its Champions Cup, the regional governing body announced Wednesday.

Besides saying that the competition will include a group phase, no details on the format or structure were disclosed.

...............

Soccer's governing body for North and Central America and the Caribbean has changed the format of its premier club championship several times in the past decade, and announced plans for a champions league competition in 2002, but abandoned it before it conducted a draw.

I really have never like Peter Crouch, but that last goal was pretty nice.

He's a goon, but a goon with a role. That goal defines his role completely.
