From the newest hall of fame writer:

"Atlanta third base coach Fredi Gonzalez is getting strong consideration for the Cubs managerial job if a move is made with Dusty Baker. Gonzalez managed in the Florida system when Cubs GM Jim Hendry scouted for the Marlins."

Celebrate good times, come on!

**shakes groove thing**

Every scenario has an "if." But, what I am pleased to see or read here is that a decorated, non-Chicago writer is talking about this subject and Fredi Gonzalez, in particular.

Gonzalez was my first choice for a long time, and while I'd prefer Dierker, Gonzalez is young enough that he could be a long-term solution to our managerial problem. I'd be all in favor of a Fredi Gonzalez hiring.

Why is he your first choice?

Because Davey Johnson was mean to him once.

Dierker is Vance's first choice now.

Here's his reasoning for Dierker (if you haven't read this already).

There are a number of reasons that I've liked Gonzalez. If the Cubs want to hire someone who isn't a retread, Gonzalez has earned his stripes. He's been a successful minor league manager and has learned under Cox in Atlanta. Personally, I think Atlanta has been the best run team over the last decade and a half, and hopefully Gonzalez brings some of that philosophy with him.

Gonzalez isn't my first choice. That would be Dierker. It's not that I think Gonzalez is a bad choice and had he written a book like Dierker where I could see all his philosophies laid bare, I might prefer him to Dierker.

Unless Dierker or Davey Johnson are brought in, I can't think of any re-tread that would be better than Gonzalez.

Can someone give me the good and the bad on him?

yes please, I know little as well

The Good: He's new, he's studied under Bobby Cox, he's not Dusty Baker

The Bad: Hendry likes him so he must be paleolithic when it comes to baseball philosophy

Fredi Gonzalez resume:

Baseball America Minor League manager of the year, 3 times (in 9 years)in 3 different leagues. 1993, 1994, 1997. In 1992, he became the 1st ever Marlins minor league manager, leading his team to runner up in the league. So, it wasn't like he was coaching the great Braves prospects of the 90s. He gets points from me for being one of the initial player developers for the Marlins. He gets points because he has been a part of the most successful player development organization in recent history. He gets points for being a winner everywhere he has been, as a head or assistant coach.

I read that part too fast and had a good chuckle.

Does anybody here ACTUALLY think Hendry is going to go after Gonzalez? I mean that would mean Hendry would have to make a smart move, which he isn't exactly known for.

It WOULDN'T surprise, that if he had to go with an unproven rookie manager, he went with Wally Backman.

Hendry was really interested in Gonzalez after the 2002 season. It makes sense.

this would be great, because given Fredi's experience with minor leaguers, we won't see more good arms ruined coming through the system.

Yes, I think Gonzalez could be high on Hendry's list. Hendry apparently was very impressed with him before hiring Baker.

Secondly, Hendry has tried to model the Cubs after the Braves. Unfortunately for Cub fans, Hendry doesn't really understand how the Braves have done what they've accomplished. Either way, hiring a lieutenant of Cox makes sense in that regard.

There are two trains of thoughts about your first statement, Vance (and gawd, I hate Star Wars, BTW):

1: If the Cubs do decide that they are MORE then one player away from competing, would it be worth going after Gonzalez, ala Girardi to Florida. Or...

2: If Hendry is delusional enough to think the Cubs might be one or two players away, would he still go after Gonzalez.

My guess is....if Hendry believes in #2 scenerio, then I doubt he will go after Gonzalez, and I totally see him going after Piniella, or some other wash out hack of a manager, who should no longer consider coming back to baseball.

Secondly, Hendry has tried to model the Cubs after the Braves. Unfortunately for Cub fans, Hendry doesn't really understand how the Braves have done what they've accomplished. Either way, hiring a lieutenant of Cox makes sense in that regard.

That's the problem, in a nutshell. I understand the Braves has had a very good blueprint, but great teams DON'T follow other teams blueprints, they create their own blueprints. Hendry shouldn't be trying to copy another teams success (At this point, it's worth a try) he should concentrating on building the NEW Cubs. And being a "LT" under Bobby Cox, doesn't mean anything, to be honest. I mean yes, Ned Yost has been a solid manager for Milwaukee, but Jimy Williams has been a CRAPPY manager for three teams (Tor/Bost/Houston). For the time being, I would hold off on calling Gonzalez a "nice find."

But it comes down to how Hendry believes 2007 will be like. If he thinks they are going to compete, then forget about Gonzalez. If Hendry feels they need to build through young players....all bets are off.

Psht. Dusty has been a winner everywhere he's been. Just ask him.
