I really don't get what they are doing with him.

I have no problem introducing a young pitcher to the majors via the bullpen, with regular usage. But you don't callup such a young inexperienced guy like this and yoyo him back and forth between jobs. And you don't skip the 5th man just because you can. It's freaking August and they are out of the race. You have to give these starts to guys who need work, not take every opportunity to push Zambrano to the limit.

Plenty of teams put prospects in relief to start their ML career, but nobody puts them there and lets them sit for 2 weeks like the Cubs. Like Goony said, I would have no problem if they did it right.

As an aside, the Cubs pitching looks to be in pretty decent shape. Marshall, Marmol, Hill, Guzman, Mateo, and Ryu have all shown flashes that they can be ML pitchers. With guys like Gallagher and Veal probably able to pitch in the majors mid-07, the Cubs can sign a front of the rotation starter, put 2 kids in the rotation, and trade a couple more while still having guys waiting in the wings. Really no excuse for Hendry not to get a big bat in a trade this offseason if FA prices are too high.

We're 10 games out dude. Gotta keep pushing for that Wild Card. I don't see those mathematics kicking in yet.

As long as Mateo doesn't get Guzman'd, I'm fine with him moving to the pen.

The problem is there is a chance he'll get Guzman'd, or Cruz'd, assuming you mean, sit in the bullpen doing nothing for two weeks because the manager is more concerned with getting to 17 games under .500 instead of developing players for next year.

That is what I mean. I want Mateo to pitch. If he isn't going to pitch at the ML level, send him down.

Yeah, I know that's what you meant, I just didn't state clearly what I was meaning. The problem is that there is a chance this could happen. There should be no chance of this happening if this management group had any brains. We should be confident that they could find him regular work on a double digit below .500 team that already has plenty of overworked bullpen arms. Even still, it's absurd to skip the 5th turn in the rotation, given their situation.

Stop using logic. It won't do you, or any of us, any good.

Somehow, entering play today, yes. 10 games out of the wildcard-13 1/2 out of the division-shows you how bad the NL has been this season, doesn't it?

Actually, 9.5 games now.

It's interesting to see teams like the Angels, Tigers, Twins, etc. rest their young pitchers (while in the middle of a pennant race, mind you) while the Cubs skip fifth starters in August when they have absolutely no chance at getting to the playoffs and some rookie pitchers who have or will blow by their previous innings pitched numbers.

Paul Sullivan writes that Mateo is scheduled to start Saturday.

Mistake? Or was he "bullpen bound" just until they next need a 5th starter?

Paul Sullivan in The Trib[/url]"] Rookie Sean Marshall will be sent on a rehab assignment next weekend to Double-A West Tenn or Triple-A Iowa. … Kerry Wood has gone home to rehab in Arizona but is expected to rejoin the team later this month. … Rookie Juan Mateo is scheduled to make his second start Saturday in Colorado.

ETA: Cubs.com says he's a go on Saturday

Juan Mateo is expected to start on Saturday, the next time the Cubs need a fifth starter. "It's hard not to give him another shot after he won his first game," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said of the rookie, who won his Major League debut on Aug. 3 against Arizona. "You can't say, 'OK, kid, thank you and we'll see you later.'"

Nothing like introducing a kid pitcher to the stupidity of Cubs management by giving him the traditional 8 days off between starts.

the NL is sad this year. Which just makes even more angry that Hendry wasted this off-season. We coulda been a contenda....

The other problem I have with the NL being so bad is that Hendry will see this and just try to make the team good enough to compete instead of builing a team that could absolutely dominate.
