I have a feeling that's going to be the first of many moves the Pirates make today.

ESPN has it as a done deal...nice move for the Tigers.

Surely Pittsburgh could have received more than a bit prospect? Wasn't Oakland or Anaheim willing to give more in return for Casey?

Added a guy w/ a .377 OBP for a 24-year-old minor league non-closing RP, so yes. On the other hand, the Tigers have all but wrapped up the ALC, so I don't see it having a great effect on their team. The Tigers are my 2nd favorite team, so I'd like to see them add a good SP (I don't trust the Gambler), but they don't seem to be focused on that.

To make room for Casey on the 25-man roster, the Tigers sent Chris Shelton to AAA Toledo.

ESPN[/url]"]To make room for Casey, Detroit optioned the contract of first baseman Chris Shelton to Triple-A Toledo.

Shelton hit 10 home runs in the month of April -- nine in the first 13 games -- but has hit only six since.

He is batting .277 with 16 homers and 45 RBI in 103 games this season.

Great move by Detroit that makes them that much tougher. Unless another team really steps it up, it looks more and more like Detroits only question is "who do we kill from the NL this yaer".

There's your answer.

Who would have predicted that in April?

Casey is nothing special. He's about a 100 career OPS+, influenced heavily by a way out of the ordinary 2004 season. Otherwise he's been mediocre or worse since 2002. I think baseballreference.com lists Dmitri Young and Troy O'Leary among the most similar hitters. Actually Rusty Greer is his most similar. Detroit was getting an OPS over 800 from 1B this year. Are they expecting a guy who had a sub 800 OPS in a more hitter friendly park to really make them better? Yes, his OBP is an improvement, but it's not like he's got a Bobby Abreu OBP.

I just don't agree. Rogers is their ace. He will likely get beat by every other ace on an AL playoff team. The Tigers are a very good team, but Bonderman is their best pitcher, Rogers isn't an "ace" and Verlander has never gone this deep in a season. And Jones isn't exactly lights out at the end of the game. Depending on how the teams shake out, they could lose in the first round.

OK, I didn't see this one coming.

We loved Casey here, but he never hit for power. I'm guessing no one offered anything better.

The papers here were talking of us sending a Lefty reliever (Grabow) to Colorado for Shealy. So, perhaps this was to open a spot for him too?

Sending Shelton down is kind of ironic. Letting him go certainly 3 years ago certainly doesn't look so bad this morning. Question: was Shelton outrighted? From CNN:

Detroit optioned the contract of first baseman Chris Shelton to Triple-A Toledo.

I've never heard the term "Option the contract" before.

EDIT: Time to put my new Sean Casey Boblehead (Fresh from Saturday night!) on ebay! :-)

I agree. Frankly, given that the only thing Casey does is get on base, he's not going to help them much. Leyland isn't going to put him near the top of the order, so he's going to hit 7th or so. He'll get on base for Inge, but that's about it. I don't see this having much impact on their chances in the playoffs.

I think "optioning" just indicates that it his option year has now been exercised, could be wrong of course.

A guy in my office (Tigers fan) is speculating that Shelton could be part of a package for Soriano. If so, I would guess Shelton would play in LF in D.C. b/c Johnson is firmly entrenched at 1B.

Shelton really cooled down after his scorching start. I don't know if he deserves to be sent down, but Casey is a strong pickup for them.

In the ESPN chat, this is what Neyer had to say:

I don't fault the Tigers for demoting Shelton, really. He's been pretty awful since April. But he's too good for Class AAA, and if he's got a good attitude he'll be back soon. I already wrote about Casey, don't want to insult him again so soon (especially since he's supposed to be a real nice guy).

Both Casey and Shelton had strong starts to the season followed by some miserable performances. Unless Casey is a strong defensive upgrade or Shelton becomes a part of a package for someone else, I'm not sure what this does for the Tigers.

I don't think this improves the Tigers much at all either. Better OBP, worse SLG by Casey. Both he and Shelton's OBP and SLG were inflated by hot April's. As long as Detroit isn't expecting any power out of Casey, and got him for his OBP, I think they'll be pleased with his performance.

No he's not. He maybe listed as the #1 on their depth chart, but come GAME 1 of the ALDS, my money is on Jeremy Bonderman as "The Man" for Detroit, followed by Rogers then Verlander.
