One less option for the Cobs.

I can't wait to see who the Cubs have in the OF next year. Right now, I'm thinking Hendry will resign Pierre and sign someone like Luis Gonzalez or Ryan Klesko.

This trade can't be judged until we see how the Phillies spend the millions they saved this offseason.

That's not true at all, considering they could have gotten at least 1 legit prospect from somebody and still had the millions to spend this offseason.

Exactly.

I just can't believe that Theo didn't drive up the price or try to integrate a third team to keep him out of NY.

One of the best players in baseball just went for a worthless shortstop and a 27 year old reliever. Good job Gillick.

I just threw up.

Hendry EASILY and I mean EASILY could've beat that package to land Abreu.

Yes..the problem is what would be Abreu's contract demands for the Cubs? Abreu told a reporter that he would accept the trade without many of the guarantees he wanted just because it was the Yankees. The Cubs would probably have had to guarantee his option and might have had to also give him an extension to get Abreu to agree.

But would JH have insisted on the Phils paying some of his K? Moreover, I recall that Abreu waived his NTC only for the Mets, Yanks and Red Sox. Thus, there was nothing JH could have done to get him.

Gillick must see this as a total salary dump. If the Phils don't spend some serious loot this offseason, he'll need to enter the witness protection program.

I wonder what Soriano will end up going for.

That's a different story, I think. Soriano is in his walk year, so the Nats aren't encumbered by his salary in 07' the way the Phils would have been with Abreu. Bowden can get a lot more, especially relative to his production this year.

Controversial statement here.... I wouldn't have gone after Abreu at all. He has 8 home runs in Philly. He's got insane on base skills but he's on the decline.

AND Abreu has a NTC..... the YANKEES or the near last place Cubs... tough choice.

I agree that I don't think Abreu would have agreed to come to Chicago.

I was dead set against it until I heard he was going for nothing and found out his option was the club's.

having to pick up the option to make the trade go down, I wouldn't have done it either.

to me his lack of power means he needed to be a one year rental and wouldn't have cost much in prospects in order for him to be a good target.

I know blasphemous, but I wonder if an incentive laden contract to...gulp....Edmonds....wouldn't be the best way to go to get production out of the outfield.

I don't know why, but this deal makes me very angry at baseball in general.

And the thought of bobby abreu smiling in a yankees hat does twice as much.

if the Yankees weren't getting nothing or poor-average performance out of about 6 or 7 of their 10+ million dollar players, I'd probably feel the same way.

as it is, they keep getting older, worse and more expensive.

NEW YORK -- The Yankees solved two of their problems with one trade on Sunday, acquiring right fielder Bobby Abreu and right-hander Cory Lidle from the Phillies for four Minor League prospects.

New York sent shortstop C.J. Henry, left-hander Matt Smith, catcher Jesus Sanchez and right-hander Carlos Monasterios to Philadelphia for Abreu, a two-time National League All-Star and 2005 Gold Glove winner. ...

The Yankees did not have to pick up Abreu's $15 million option for 2008 in order to get him to waive his no-trade clause, as the Phillies gave him $1.5 million to do so. New York will pay Abreu $4.4 million for the remainder of 2006 and $15 million in 2007. The Yankees retain the option for 2008, which they can buy out for $2 million. ...

Abreu's arrival probably signals that 2006 will be the final season of Gary Sheffield's tenure in New York, as the Yankees hold a $13 million option on him for next season. New York now has $41 million committed to Abreu, Matsui and Johnny Damon for 2007.

Well you can't knock the Phillies for trading for Jesus, a real savior.

Maybe the Phillies can now sign the pitcher Jesus Sanchez that pitched for the Cubs a few years ago. A battery of Jesus Sanchez pitching to Jesus Sanchez would be funny. :D

Good point I read on BTF that I'm now shamelessly stealing. The Phils DFAd Ryan Franklin today. Why wouldn't they include Franklin in the deal so they could get rid of his salary.
