NY Daily News[/url]"] Phillies GM Pat Gillick, according to a source, had been given the go-ahead from Abreu's agent yesterday afternoon to work out a deal with the Yanks, Mets or Red Sox. Since Abreu has a full no-trade clause, he is able to dictate which teams he'd be willing to play for; the final trio comprised the ones that he was willing to waive the no-trade clause for without requiring that the $16 million club option on his contract for 2008 be picked up. This was a critical step in reaching a deal since the option issue had been a significant obstacle in all talks.

While the Mets, according to a person close to the team, have focused most of their attention on adding pitching (if they make any moves at all), Gillick and Yanks GM Brian Cashman began engaging in more serious talks as the afternoon went on, according to a source. It was believed that the Yankees might be sending reliever Scott Proctor to the Phillies in exchange for Abreu and, possibly, former Yankee pitcher Jon Lieber. Prospects could also be involved in the deal. Instead of picking up Abreu's option, the Bombers were expected to pay a lump sum of somewhere near $1 million to Abreu in exchange for him waiving the no-trade clause.

The Yankees are obviously getting better. You don't add a guy with a .400 on-base percentage and not get better.

No it doesn't. The are better, only because the Yankees current OF of Cabrera/Damon/Williams blows chunks. Abreu IS AN OBVIOUS upgrade. Now would he be an upgrade if the Yankees had Matsui/Sheffield instead of Cabrera/Williams.? (Obviously if they had their stars back, they wouldn't consider Abreu, nonetheless) no he wouldn't. In essence, the Yankees made a lateral move. And to pay about $30+ mill for a doubles hitter with a great OBP, still does NOT improve the Yankees. Getting Schimdt/Zito, or any solid pitcher would improve the Yankees moreso then Abreu.

I am not taking away from Abreu, but considering the talent level on the Yankees, already...they didn't get better. They ALREADY had the offense, they needed they pitcher. This was a move to make a move type deal, kinda like a more expensive Raul Mondesi type deal. And Lidle---while an improvement over Ponson (my left arm is better then Ponson) is still a not-so-great move.

All I can say is this...WHAT THEY HECK ARE THE YANKEES THINKING ABOUT? Cause it ain't about winning.

Guys with OPBs over .400 who hit from the left side and play their home games at Yankee Stadium (where the RF porch is a mere 315 feet away) do help you win, plain and simple. Money is no object for the Yankees, so please don't even bring it up.

If the proposed deal goes through, the Yankees will have a payroll that is more than $100M more than any other team in baseball. What a joke.

All of this seems so illogical. "Yeah he's better, but they aren't getting better!"

So if I'm a billionaire, and I add another billion in assets, did I not get richer because I'm already rich?

Thanks God for the luxury tax! \:D/

Selected OFs by OPS:

Abreu .861

Damon .827

Sheff .811

Matsui .807

Bernie .754

Melky .745

Bubba .557

Abreu's number is probably a little park-inflated compared to the other guys, but he's still a big jump over what they have. Despite Matsui's heroic comeback efforts, there is reason to doubt he'll be able to match his pre-injury performance this year. Just ask DLee.

Good point.

Abreu was in the original starting lineup for the Phillies today, but was pulled just before gametime. Sounds like he's gone.

ESPN News is now reporting that the Yankees and Phillies have come to a "tentative agreement" for Abreu. No word on what the Phillies will be getting.

I'd be pissed if I was a Philly fan and the original trade is indeed correct. CJ White and Steven Henry, just so the Phillies don't have to pick up the contract? For Abreu, they should have at least gotten one of Hughes or Tabata, even if they ate part of the contract.

The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees have a tentative deal to send Phillies right fiedler Bobby Abreu and pitcher Cory Lidle to New York ESPN.com's Buster Olney reported Sunday.

The teams had yet to decide which players or prospects will go from the Yankees to Philadelphia, Olney reported.

It's on ESPN.com as well.

I haven't been paying any attention to injury updates, but this can't bode well for either Sheffield or Matsui, and it's likely Sheffield. Matsui is signed through 2009 but Sheffield is a FA after this year. This move probably means that one of the two isn't coming back healthy any time soon and will likely signal the end of Sheffield in the Bronx since Abreu is signed for next year already.

Yep, that's 2 trades for superstars in which no top prospects were given to the teams trading the star players. Texas and the Yanks got better in 2006, and kept the same outlook for 2007 and beyond.

ESPN updated their article:

Stark reported the Yankees will send 18-year-old minor-league shrotstop C.J. Henry -- their No. 1 pick in 2005 -- and 27-year-old left-handed reliever Matt Smith. The Phillies will also pick one other minor-leauge player from an agreed-upon list, while the Yankees will take on responsibility for Abreu and Lidle's contracts. Abreu alone is due close to $37 million over the next 2½ years.

The Yankees basically got Abreu for nothing.

Nothing but $$.

LCCF hasn't done his Yankees Payroll & the Luxury Tax updates for awhile, but I think the NYY are to the point where they're paying ~40% luxury tax surcharge on additional salaries added to payroll.
