I guess my reasoning is we haven't heard much from the ARam side and there seems to be a lot of interest out there. I wasn't trying to come off as a troll.

You weren't. Your figures are probably right in line with what he'll get if he opts out. But, I'm not sure if he wants to or not. There's a lot of indication that he likes Chicago. Why? I have no damn clue. Maybe he doesn't like change. I don't know. But if he likes Chicago, and Hendry offers him the same extension that he offered Lee after an MVP-like season, Ramirez may feel that is fair and sign before anyone can tell him that they'd pay him more.

The #1 priority for Hendry has to be signing ARam to an extension. If the Cubs lose ARam, Hendry might as well kiss his job goodbye because there is no way he could fill all of the holes during the offseason.

Even if Aramis opts out, other teams still can't negotiate with him until the beginning of the free agency period, which will be after Hendry has a chance to negotiate one on one.

The fact that Hendry doesn't think its a problem makes me think it will be a problem.

He said yesterday he wants to play here next year, which is better than the "I'll just let my agent handle it" mantra we've been hearing, imo.

If Hendry felt he couldn't sign him he would've traded him at the deadline. Right? I'm hoping at least...

I think Hendry has shown he lacks the ability to think that far in the future.

hendry wrapped up lee in a similar situation so i'm not worried about aram. the fact that the cubs will have a boatload of $ (which will allow them to overpay for aram-4years @ 15 mil?) and no true replacement at 3b points to soem kind of agreement in principal that will be finalized soon after the end of the season.

I think RAM will get the exact same deal as Lee. If that's not good enough Cubs let him walk. We can't say we have a boatload of money yet because we have no idea what the team salary will be set at in 2007. I'm worried that the TRIB is selling the Cubs, and that could impact the 2007 salary...

It's actually quite a different situation. He signed Lee early in the season, when he had incentive to sign early (avoiding the risk that injury would hurt his negotiations). With Aramis the season is over. There's no incentive to sign early. Hendry is up the proverbial creek with Aramis. He's got to sign him and Aramis's agent knows it.

Ru kidding he pre-empted the signing of Kerry Wood, which was a killer of a deal for the Cubs.

Not only would he look like a fool, but he would probably be an unemployed fool next fall. There would be too many holes to fill if ARam leaves.

He'd be a fool to give ARam a stupid contract because he feels like he has to.

People can have their criticisms of Hendry, but I think they should at least apply to the man's record. Hendry has a strong history of being able to sign/acquire the men he targets.

It is legitimate to question the men he targets if you don't go for his brand of team building, but I don't think your observation holds up when compared to his record. It's actually quite the opposite, Hendry has often been credited with being a strong GM when it comes to sealing the deal with the guy he wants (that's why the Furcal deal was so shocking last year).

There doesn't seem to be a lot of support for the 5\75m contract I floated. My point isn't about the actual money involved it's a GM doing something stupid because he feels like he has to instead of what he should do. It’s a recipe for disaster.

Why would signing RAM be stupid?

What should he do?

I'm not saying signing ARam is stupid, IMO he'd be the most desirable FA position player on the market. I think giving him a ridiculous contract because a GM feels like they have to is stupid.

Today quote from Buster Olney:

Kevin (Manassas): Please tell me that the Cubs will do whatever it takes to keep Aramis Ramirez, and will the Cubs go after Soriano?

SportsNation Buster Olney: (2:01 PM ET ) Kevin: They're crazy if they don't get it done; they should make a pre-emptive strike right now, because once the guy gets a real sniff of what the market is going to be, he suddenly could be in a position where he's got 5-6 teams with big dollars bidding on him. If the Cubs want to keep him, they might have to make him a Derrek Lee-type offer right now -- because in the end, he may get more than that.

Gordon, (Philly, PA): Hey Buster, I've heard lots of talk about possible suitors for Aramis Ramirez if he opts out of Chicago but nothing about the Phillies being one of them. As a team in desperate need of a third baseman and right handed bats (as well as better protection for Ryan Howard), wouldn't he be a perfect fit? Do you think the Phils will make a serious run at acquiring him?

SportsNation Buster Olney: (2:13 PM ET ) Gordon: The Phillies make sense, and so do the Angels, the Rangers, the Padres, etc. That's why the Cubs should be working very hard right now to make him an offer he can't refuse.

Offer A-Ram the best deal you can afford. Too me that's $12-$13 mil. per for 4-5 years.

Either he wants to stay with the Cubs, or he's looking to maximize his value. If it's the former, any reasonable offer should land him. If it's the latter, the only way you sign him is to overpay.

Does any think the Cubs should overpay given all of the other deficiencies on this team?

Sounds like Hendry can't win in this scenario.

Sucks to be him I guess...

That's what worries me is that this and Pierre would be Hendry's big "free agent" signings.
