Zambrano for Young, Dukes, and Upton?

I...really don't know how I'd feel about that deal. Those three guys clearly have their share of makeup problems, but they are also three of the best positional prospects in baseball. Ideally, they could form a young core that could make this team an offensive powerhouse for years to come. If the organization can keep them out of trouble, they could all turn out to be spectacular.

Man, I'd have a hard time walking away from that deal.

Granted, the D-Rays would probably only trade Dukes for Zambrano, but since we're talking hypothetically, I don't see much harm in it.

Im not trading Zambrano. He is a staff ace.

You know this is the first time I'll ever say I'd give up Prior for Upton and Dukes.

I have no real care for Young, not a huge fan. If we got him I'd be happy, but I'd be happier if we turned right around and traded him along with Pie for some pitching.

I think if I was any team but the cubs I would do this trade. Since we are the Cubs we would only screw up the development of these kids. Thus I say nah.

Yeah, Dusty would do real well with rookies with makeup problems. He can barely keep the well behaved ones from imploding completely.

You wouldn't ask for more after 5 1/3 shutout innings? Will you change your mind after he wins a game?

I don't think Prior could get any of these players, and I don't know how anyone would rather have Upton or Dukes over Young. I'll take a 20 year-old hitting .348 in AAA with a .900+ OPS and 30/30 potential any day. I'll take a guess and assume it's because he only has 10 walks.

Ty Wiggington was hit by a pitch that fractured his left hand in the game vs the Yankees today. He's expected to miss 4-6 weeks. Tampa Bay is expected to call a minor leaguer up to replace him on the roster; BJ Upton has been mentioned as the most likely call-up.

Essentially the lesser of the three evils.

My favorite is Elijah Dukes because this is a great quote. It's good to see he gets it.

Dukes, the oldest of the trio at 22, laughs and shakes his head. Trouble? He may be the king. He has been suspended four times the last two years, and was ejected five times last year and twice this year.

"The only thing holding me back is me," says Dukes, who is hitting .293 with 10 homers and 50 RBI this season. "I know I can play in the big leagues. On any team. But they want to see whether I can stay away from trouble.

"If I can just do that, if I can just keep my cool, I'll be fine. Because when there is trouble, whether it's my fault or not, I'm the one who's got to pay the consequences."

Dukes is staring disgustedly at his baseball jersey while talking. It has dark stains around the collar. His pants have tears by both knees.

If this were the big leagues, the uniform would be in the garbage.

But this is Durham.

"In the big leagues, you throw your uniform on the ground, and it's washed and hung up nicely in your locker," Dukes says. "Here you do that, you come back the next day and find it still on the floor. Those guys up there (in the big leagues) shower in Evian. Here, we use sewer water."

I think this is the first deal in which I would trade Z. Again, this is extremely hypothetical. But I'm not trading Z for just anybody.

If I'm trading Zambrano, I have to get an arm back for him. Despite that being the best combo of 3 offensive prospects in the league, I still wouldn't do it for Zambrano.

I wouldn't do the deal either, but not because there's no pitching involved. I'm not narrow-minded(for lack of a better phrase) to eliminate the possibility of trading Z, but if we were to explore dealing him, I don't think it's overly excessive to expect at least one player that has had Major League experience. Not even a stud like a Cabrera, Tejada, etc, but someone who will be a solid contributor at the Major League level with much more certainty than the prospect(s) who haven't reached that level yet.

That line was straight

if the Rays really want to dump these guys, I see the A's or RedSox getting really fat. is there any other GMs in baseball that wouldn't consider the character issues too big a risk?

there is Williams, but the only reason he picked up Jenks is because he was free. don't know if he'd do it if it meant giving up players.

I don't think Upton is a bad character guy at all. He made the Majors 2 years after he was drafted like he promised he would, and since then they've had him sit in AAA for 2 years. I'd be pretty pissed too.

Dukes I think is just a seriously misunderstood guy, and I like him alot more than I like Young. He has power, paitence, will hit for decent average, can play CF, and works hard.

Young is a spoiled brat but hes a stunningly talented one so I guess I'd take him. I'd want an arm though, someone like Wade Davis or Jacob McGee.

I'd see about sending one of our better P prospects for one of the 3. And remember, the Cubs have drafted Bobby Brownlie and Ben Christensen, and strongly pursued Furcal this winter, so it's not like they've always hung up on charachter.

with their inability to develop hitters and the 40 man squeeze they have year after year, I've been advocating trading pitching prospects for hitting prospects for years.

What character issues did Brownlie have? I remember health issues, but not character.

Maybe I'm imagining this, but didn't he holdout and reenter the draft after refusing to sign with someone?

He held out for awhile after being drafted by the Cubs and talked about returning to school for his final year of eligibility, but he signed with the Cubs without returning to class.

Okay, then I was imagining it. Being on the same sleeping schedule as a 10 day old really messes with your memory!

He threatened to pull a Matt Harrington, but didn't. However, he still wound up like him.

I've got a 9-day old. Congrats!
