Well, I guess Hendry never said far fewer than 79 wins wouldn't be acceptable. So as long as Dusty doesn't get them hot to get back to 79-83, this season will be acceptable.

I think Hendry has always wanted to extend Dusty. He's hoping that by the time the season is over, he can sneak this one under the radar. He's wrong in thinking that. But I think Dusty is Hendry's guy and the only way Dusty goes is if Hendry goes first.

My sig says it all.

If Dusty's back in 2007, I will give thought to giving up on this team altogether. It will show that this organization has no commitment to winning a World Series, no commitment to improving the organizational philosophy, and a complete blindness when it comes to the competency and accountability. As long as the monkeys sell out Wrigley every year, they could care less.

I'm tired of empty excuses. I'm tired of random double switches that make no sense. I'm tired of this organization claiming every castoff and piece of absolute trash they pick up is gold. I'm tired of missing out on big name free agents like Miguel Tejada, Vlad Guerrero, Carlos Beltran, and just about everyone else.

I can't take much more of this, needless to say.

Way ahead of you kid-o. I haven't gone to a single game all year, much less bought any Cubs merchandise.

Really has Dusty done anything this year that is a surprise to any Cub fan that has to sit through his poop. Its not like he is managing any different now than he did in 2003. He is a bad manager, especially for this team. Hendry obviously likes him and what he does a lot and is waiting for any reason to resign him. I said it in another post. Take a well run organization and take away all reason and accountability and you have the Cubs.

I'm not going to say much about Neifi because unforunately he's hitting better than everyone's boy Cedeno right now.

Another rookie bust.

This statement is so stupid on so many levels it boggles my mind. It might be beyond stupid.

Why is it stupid?

Cedeno is over-matched here, it's not even funny.

Neifi, this year, is hitting better and plays better defense so why not play him over Cedeno right now?

Keep off the Cedeno train; he's an average fielder in a huge slump.

So you want the Cubs to play Neifi over Cedeno right now because you want the Cubs to win more games in a lost season and not allow Cedeno to attempt to work through his struggles?

Because this team is horrible and has no shot at the playoffs, much less a .500 record whatsoever? Because Neifi is nothing more than an overrated piece of trash who doesn't deserve anything resembling the contract Hendry foolishly threw at him?

Let Cedeno work through his struggles. If he still is playing horrible at the end of the year, boohoo, play some one with even a vague future in his place like Ryan Theriot instead.

Neifi Perez is terrible. He's one of the worst players in the history of the game for crying out loud! I don't care how hot he is or if looking upon his visage cures all known diseases; the man shouldn't be starting over anyone with even a mediocre ceiling.

i am not against walking away from baseball altogether. if this offseason doesn't go well, i will. there are better things to give my time to. i love this site, but the cubs are a waste of energy.

Which makes Cedeno's numbers look even worse. I agree Neifi is not the answer, but the more Cedeno plays the more it is evident that he is not the answer either.

At this point, I could care less who Baker plays. The fact is that the Cubs team Hendry assembled is horrible. Hendry has showed an inability to develop any type of serviceable position prospect. He is going to have to make some big deals and have a tremendous offseason to make this team able to compete next year.

this is somewhat of a silver lining, i guess...

With a 40-61 record, the Cubs are unlikely to get back to .500. But Hendry said Baker will not be evaluated on victories and defeats alone, suggesting the final two months will be spent looking at younger players.

"Maybe by [Monday's trading deadline] if a couple of guys aren't here anymore, then it'll open up some playing time for somebody else," Hendry said. "I'm not going to make my final judgments on every one- or two-run loss or win that we have between now and October."

of course, whether that happens or not remains to be seen.

Unless you stop to remember that Ronny has a whopping 422 major league at bats to Neifi's 4955. Neifi has been proving for over a decade now how horrible of an offensive player he is. Judging by the last 2-3 years, Ronny is still improving.

Furthermore, stories of Neifi's defense are greatly exaggerated.

I realize that, but I don't want to wait for Cedeno to get 4955 ABs to realize he is a worse player than Neifi. I truly hope that Cedeno improves greatly over the next 2 months, but there is nothing to suggest that he will. Cedeno has horrible plate discipline and is an all or nothing type hitter (very much like Neifi).

I'm pretty much at the point where I hope none of the promising young players are called up to this team. I'd rather not see what Clines, Sarge, and Baker can do to Eric Patterson and Felix Pie.

I don't understand the "promising" label given to Pie. Don't we already have enough guys who lack OBP? If he can't get on base at AAA what makes people think he will all of a sudden develop an eye at the major league level?

And Hendry's a hypocrite. If he hadn't signed some of the veteran players or kept them around, then we would have had some playing time opened up for somebody else.

Was that speculation about Dusty having already signed an extension way back when Hendry got his ever disproven? This would kinda fit in with that.

Anyways despite all the dramatics, Im sure Dusty will be back, and chances are most everyone else will be, too. If their fanbase were ever going to erode, it would have started long before this year.

He's a 21 year old holding his own at AAA. The age appropriate level for some one like Pie is in the Florida State League, where I believe the average age is ~21.5 years old.

Plus, he's still performing relatively well at AAA (.272/.330/.411) despite his recent slump, where his average plummeted. In May, he went .230/.304/.372, in June he went .222/.287/.343. Considering he lost half a season last year due to that bone bruise along with the unexpected bump up to AAA, I'm willing to give him plenty of slack.

Anybody who ever said this guy projected to be a prototypical leadoff hitter didn't know what he was talking about; he's a five tool outfielder who projects to hit for pretty good power (20-30 HRs) as he continues to fill out his frame. The guy is a middle of the lineup hitter, plain and simple.

His IsoD (.058) could stand to improve, but it's right in line with his career numbers. Plus, on the Cubs, that number would put him ahead of Pagan, Neifi, Cedeno, Pierre, Jones, Bynum, and Blanco. Whether or not that's a good thing or a sad thing is your call.

He probably won't be ready until Mid-2007 at the earliest (imo), but more time in AAA should help him significantly. He still has to work on his base stealing and also could use some more coaching to help get his patience up a tick to around major league average (which I want to say is about .065).

It's hard to radically change a guy's walk profile, but it is possible to make minor improvements upon it.

Dusty vehemently denied it. Whether or not it was real or an act is anyone's guess.

Such is life. There are very specific reasons the Cubs have not won a title in nearly a century. Until the people at the top of the totem pole are completely committed to the endeavor, then it will always be hit and miss.
