I feel very conflicted about this one - I have a lot of love for both of these bands. Both of them have created songs that have taken on mythic quality in their awesomeness.

 

But the redneck in me won out. I voted Skynyrd, mostly cause Queen's lesser stuff is really, really atrocious. Plus three guitars is AWESOME.

I like both bands but have to go with Lynyrd Skynryd. They just have so many songs that I like. Queen, while having many good songs also just don't have the consistency in songs. Sheer Heart Attack, Queen and Queen II were excellent but some their other albums did very little for me. The song 'Stone Cold Crazy' almost swayed me, but no.

I would argue that they helped revolutionize the southern rock genre. (By the way, ZZ Top should've been in this, but that's another argument).

 

Just because hillbillies like them doesn't mean they are a "hillbilly band". Yeah, they're from the country and respect the Stars and Bars, but what does that have to do with their music? I feel like that's about as valid as me calling Queen a "gay band".

 

And as far as now is concerned, they have the name, but they're not really Skynyrd... three of the original band members were tragically killed in 1977 (i think) and they didn't reunite until 10 years later. They are still writing and playing original music, so I wouldn't really call them 100% cover. Regardless, I don't think where they stand now has much bearing on this tournament as their influence and hits were made before the plane crash.

Rampant generalizations about a band's fanbase are:

 

1 - illogical

 

2 - irrelevant.

 

Secondly, just because they can be classified as "Southern Rock" doesn't mean that they weren't excellent musicians and rock artists.

 

And lastly, as OleMissCub has repeatedly pointed out, any Lynyrd Skynyrd after the plane crash doesn't really count as Lynyrd Skynyrd, and so has nothing to do with this voting.

Something J.R. and I can agree on. That new thing isn't skynard and using it to bash the real stuff just doesn't make any sense.

Somebody said earlier that Queen's good stuff is great but their bad stuff is horrible. I agree with that.
