According to the Cubs.com article Prior should be back in a couple of days. so calling up Hill or Guzman would just pull them off every 5th day.

Uhh, I'd believe Satan before I believe anything coming out of the Cubs org.

Theriot is a Cub product. Fontenot has more pop in his bat.

Theriot has better plate discipline and is more of a leadoff type hitter. Decent speed.

Fontenot has had a much better walk rate each of the last two years.

From the Cubs:

CUBS PLACE PRIOR ON DISABLED LIST,

RECALL THERIOT FROM IOWA

Friday, July 14, 2006

The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Mark Prior on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique muscle, retroactive to July 5. In a corresponding roster move, the Cubs recalled infielder Ryan Theriot from Triple-A Iowa.

Prior, 25, was 0-4 with a 7.71 ERA (18 ER/21.0 IP) in four starts this season. He began the year on the disabled list with a right subscapularis strain and was activated on June 18. Most recently, Prior tossed a season-high 6.0 innings July 4 in Houston, allowing three earned runs in a 7-2 defeat. He was a late scratch for his scheduled start on July 9 in Milwaukee.

Theriot, 26, has spent the majority of the season with Iowa, batting .305 (84-for-275) with 10 doubles, five triples and 21 RBI in 71 games. The switch-hitter is making his second appearance with Chicago this season, having gone 0-for-4 with a run in six games from May 8-26.

4 AB's in 17 games in his first stint. I doubt Theriot is not going to play much this time either.

Raindrops keep falling on my head

And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed

Nothin seems to fit

Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling

So I just did me some talkin to the sun

And I said I didnt like the way he got things done

Sleepin on the job

Those raindrops are falling on my, head they keep falling

But theres one thing I know

The blues he sends to meet me wont defeat me

It wont be long till happiness steps up to greet me

Raindrops keep falling on my head

But that doesnt mean my eyes will soon be turnin red

Cryings not for me

Cause Im never gonna stop the rain by complainin

Because Im free

Nothings worrying me.

I got to looking at these lyrics, and I swear this song was talking about the Cubs.

I'm sure he'll get his weekly at-bat. Too bad, because it seems he has the unfortunate knack of getting on base and scoring runs. He'll never play for the Cubs doing that.

Too bad he does something pesky like...GET ON BASE! OMG! How do these clowns in Cubs management keep their jobs? Young guys can't play because the manager would rather play has-been veterans. In the meantime, we could get more of a handle on who might be ready NEXT year in '07. Now, whether Dusty stays or not for next year, we won't have any idea who's ready to be brought up, what positions we need to stock for next year. Don't these guys realize that that's what happens when you are out of it? The teams with a GM with a clue go through the rest of the season testing their young'uns trying to find out who's ready for next year, who's not, and where they need help!

Sorry. Thanks for letting me vent, but enough's enough already!

Ryan bring an extra soft cushion with you.

I wonder if this means a middle infielder (Walker) will be traded?

My thoughts exactly. I think we'll see some trades and very soon.

Could you imagine the joy on this board if Neifi was actually traded?

Neifi was listed among possible infielders in this week's Sports Illustrated to be shipped out, but we all know better than to think Jim and Dusty would allow it.

Theriot's second stint in the big leagues was pretty short. I have to wonder what is going through Jim Hendry's head at this point. The team is 20 games under .500 this late in the season, and he is more than happy to be fielding a team including Rusch, Neifi, Pagan, Nevin, Novoa, etc.

Theriot looked weak in the field and at the plate. I don't blame Hendry for using Neifi over Theriot.

I am not on the Theriot bandwagon. He looks to me to be nothing more than a utility/AAAA player.

He very well may be, but the Cubs are not benefiting any by not giving him a chance to show whether he can adjust to major league pitching or not. Last I checked his numbers in AAA were pretty impressive (although no power). With his age taken into consideration, they will have to make a decision soon as to whether he can be a cheap utitility type player or he is nothing more than AAA roster filler.

The Cubs will wait until the September callups to bring up any prospects. Then Dusty will insist on giving them limited playing time to protect the integrity of the playoff race.

Then going into next year we'll all be wondering and arguing about which young players are good enough to make the team or to take a starting position.

Different year, same old Cubs with exatly the same philosophy exhibited by whichever re-tread Baseball man is managing the team.

I am in a dark, dark place concerning the Cubs immediate and midterm future.

So what? Neifi is just a utility man, and he isn't even any good at that role. With some seasoning in 2006 Theriot could fill Neifi's role for the MLB minimum in 2007. I'd be very happy to have a quality utility man for $325K.
