This poll is causing serious conflict with me. I love the vintage Skynard. I don't consider the current band to be any more than just a cover band.

Van Halen was one of my favs as well. I think I'll go listen to some of both that are on my computer and try to make a decision.

Skynard first...I'll share with you.

If I leave here tomorrow

Would you still remember me?

For I must be travelling on, now,

cause theres too many places Ive got to see.

But, if I stayed here with you, girl,

Things just couldnt be the same.

cause Im as free as a bird now,

And this bird you can not change.

Lord knows, I cant change.

Bye, bye, its been a sweet love.

Though this feeling I cant change.

But please dont take it badly,

cause lord knows Im to blame.

But, if I stayed here with you girl,

Things just couldnt be the same.

Cause Im as free as a bird now,

And this bird youll never change.

And this bird you can not change.

Lord knows, I cant change.

Lord help me, I cant change.

And now a little Van Halen....

Oh wow, man !

Wait a second man. whaddaya think the teachers gonna look like this year ?

My butt, man !

T-t-teacher stop that screaming, teacher dont you see ?

Dont wanna be no uptown fool.

Maybe I should go to hell, but Im doin well,

Teacher needs to see me after school.

Chorus:

I think of all the education that I missed.

But then my homework was never quite like this.

Got it bad, got it bad, got it bad,

Im hot for teacher.

I got it bad, so bad,

Im hot for teacher.

Spoken:

Hey, I heard you missed us, were back !

I brought my pencil

Gimme something to write on, man

I heard about your lessons, but lessons are so cold.

I know about this school.

Little girl from cherry lane, how did you get so bold ?

How did you know that golden rule ?

Chorus

(guitar solo)

Oh man, I think the clock is slow

I dont feel tardy

Class dismissed

Damn...still can't decide!

I just found this quote from Ronnie....

"We thought Neil was shooting all the ducks in order to kill one or two," Ronnie told Rolling Stone magazine regarding the creation of the answer song. The band felt that Young's lyrical content was representative of the shortsighted "Yankee" belief that all Southern men should be held accountable for the verbalizations and actions of a racist minority.

Which begs the question of whether it really was a minority that was racist at that time, or whether those who were not racist did anything to speak out against or to stop those who were racist.

I would submit that Skynyrd's generation of southerners (baby boomers) were the first generation where racists were indeed the minority.

Strange thread :)

Strange matchup too.

Van Halen had 6 great albums with Roth until they took Hagar and became a poppy-rock version of their old selves (which was kind of strange, because Hagar's earlier solo work wasn't all that sappy).

I know Skynyrd was legendary too----just a personal preference here.

Eddie revoluntionized rock guitar playing for an entire generation; the latter albums with Hagar sullied his reputation, but that can't erase the volume of incredible work VH put together before.

VH gets the vote.

I still think of "Jump" and the '84 Cubs when I think of Van Halen.

I bet Todd Wellemeyer would vote for Lynard Skynard in this poll.

That's why I can't really take them seriously. 19 different groupings? Even Dusty Baker shows more consistency with his lineups. You want a real band? Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, John Bonham. One group, one lineup.

Truffle, i'm a huge fan of the "one group, one lineup" thing, as in John, Paul, George, and Ringo...and as you pointed out Paige, Bonham, Plant and Jones. As you can see from my rant on page 1 about Lynyrd Skynyrd. However, it should be known that all those different groupings came about AFTER their plane crash, and thus, after the REAL Lynyrd Skynyrd had gone. After the crash they never had another hit, naturally...BECAUSE THE REAL SKYNYRD DIDN'T EXIST ANYMORE!!!....Grrr....I hate those guys posing as Skynyrd these days.

well if that's the feeling, I don't feel so bad about leaving out Journey or other bands that do similar things. Journey's only remaining original member is the keyboard player, yet they are still on tour

Hell, I personally think that the Stones jinxed themselves creatively by losing Brian Jones. Nearly every one of their No.1's came with Brian Jones writing and playing guitar for them.

Um, am I wrong or did Page & Plant put out some music and tour? I can't say I listened to any of the songs on the album or anything else, but unless they reincarnated Bonham, they had a different lineup. Now, they didn't tour as "Led Zeppelin" but that's what people were there to see. And from what I gathered from their introduction speech into the R&R HOF, they didn't invite Jones to play w/ them either on the album/tour - so they also had a different bassist too.

To me, if you lose a member of the band and continue releasing albums and/or, essentially playing the same music, it doesn't matter if you keep the name or not. I just don't like it. The Who did the same thing after Moon died (I think they even went on the day after Entwistle died too).

Completely agree that Stones w/ Jones are far better than Stones w/o. And you & I have had this discussion elsewhere, so I won't rehash it here. But I have to say, the Stones still put out some great songs w/o Brian Jones. And a world w/o Sticky Fingers or Exile on Main St is not a world I'd want to be a part of.

This is an absolute joke.

Skynyrd's done more for the rock genre and has had more songs, especially THE song thats heard at every rock concert, whether it's played or not.

eddie van halen is one of the greatest guitarists ever to pick up a guitar, period.

1984 >>> every lynryd skynyrd album

Skynyrd was the band of my formative years.

I wore out two editions of "Gold & Platinum."

I used Skynyrd's "Comin' Home" as the basis for a major project in a morbidly serious course at UK once. Freaked the stiff bastards into giving me an A.

I voted for Van Halen. Today, when I reach for music, I want it [expletive] LOUD. VH plays loud alot better than Skynyrd, IMHO.

He is a great guitarist, but Van Halen still just annoys me. Skynyrd's sound is unique and original. They had three lead guitarists AND a piano - -who else could pull that off?

Furthermore, I find Halen's lyrics really lame and childish, where as Skynyrd's are much more from the heart. The Ballad of Curtis Loew, All I Can Do is Write About it, FreeBird, compared to Jump, Panama, and Hot For Teacher ("I got my pencilll, schoool dis-misseddddd"). C'mon.
