Well, it's not like there were a ton of options out there with some of the best pitchers going to the mound yesterday. And, you'd have to go back to 2001 for a marquee starting pitching match-up:

2005 – Chris Carpenter (NL), Mark Buerhle (AL)

2004 - Mark Mulder (AL), Roger Clemens (NL)

2003 – Esteban Loaiza (AL), Jason Schmidt (NL)

2002 – Derrek Lowe (AL), Curt Schilling (NL)

2001 – Roger Clemens (AL), Randy Johnson (NL)

I like the lack of disgusting Cubs performances for 4 days.

They should do away with the All-Star Game in WBC years and have a mid-season rematch of the WBC teams.

THIS TIME IT COUNTS

Without an all-star break, how could Jim Hendry possibly find the time to assess the team's situation. He needs these four days so he can . . . check the standings, I guess.

I don't know about kids these days, but when I was a kid I was always excited about the all star game. This was before HR derby was televised, too.

Now, I'm kinda "blah" about the whole deal and I have a feeling that kids are the same way now.

BTW, I was a "kid" from about 84 til 93

Well, I'm 27, and as much as I slam the ASG every year, I end up watching it and get all mushy and starstruck seeing that many great ballplayers together, so I guess I'm just a big ol' kid.

And the whole "THIS TIME IT COUNTS" thing is stupid.

It "counted" last year too. You can stop saying "this time..." any time now.

I still enjoy the all-star game. It doesn't hurt anything, and it's fun for the fans.

I hate the home-field provision, though. How the World Series could possibly come down to an at-bat in July between a Devil Rays pitcher and a Pirates hitter just infuriates me to no end.

Agreed, if it counts, then take the 25-30 best players, and I want to see people bunting, throwing inside pitches, running over catchers, etc. None of this every team gets a representative crap.

Yeah, the "every team has a player" stuff grates. I say the 25 (or 30 or however many) best players, with at least one player required on the roster for the team of the host stadium.

They shouldn't get rid of the All Star Game, they just need to make it what it should be: an exhibition. The ASG should not count for anything. It should be for fun. If you are worried about tie games, just end the thing with a home run derby. But please make it an exhibition game.

I will not be watching.

Because the fact that giving HFA to one league because it's an odd-numbered year instead of an even-numbered year on the calendar is SO MUCH more appropriate??

I think it's cool that the game means something. Frankly, I don't think it hurts a thing.

And "This Time It Counts" isn't the promo that they use anymore. That slogan only lives because posters on message boards keep bringing it up over and over again.

I think that whoever has the better record should have home field advantage. The All Star game determining it is beyond stupid.

Give it to the team with the better record. Isn't that why you play the regular season, to determine HFA? Whoever has the better record between the two World Series participants gets the HFA regardless of whether one team won the WC and the other won their division. Best record gets WS HFA.

I dont think there is a perfect way to determind HFA, to tell you the truth.

Say that some year the Dodgers win 100 games in a weak NL West, and the White Sox win 99 in a tough AL Central. The Dodgers should get HFA because of their easier schedule?

It's not ideal, but your argument could just as much apply to other sports. The team with home field advantage throughout the playoffs in one of the NFL conferences, for example, could have won it because of being in a weak division. Although not perfect, I think it is more justifiable to determine home field advantage based on best record rather than deciding whether the Mets or Tigers, for example, get home field advantage based on what players from other teams do in the All-Star game.

How about this...each team gets a point for total wins, and the team from the league that has won more interleague games gets another point for each win difference. In other words, the Mets would have to be like 60 games better then the Tigers to get home field advantage.
