IMO the Yanks or Red Sox may give him billions.

Great. That means Hendry will bid against himself and give Wade Miller a $500M contract and think he did a fantastic job.

Yes he will. I would love to make the money Zito is going to get out of those teams and then that would make Schmidt second in the big money race. So yes, your theory will work in the world according to Mr. Hendry.

Schmidt is likely to receive a much better contract. I'm guessing he may even take just a 3-year deal. Schmidt is better and a better fit for the Cubs. I'd love to add Schmidt and a big bat in the OF.

It will take a minimum of 5/60 to get Zito. I'm guessing 5/70. The Cubs should take a pass on this one.

Agreed. Zito has a GREAT curveball, but not a curveball that is worth almost $12 mill per. With Mulder doing his best Rusch's impersonatoin, and Hudson not exactly being light's out, and that is switching from the AL to the NL, which is a easier jump then NL to the AL. So, I would no to Zito.

Agreed. Give me Schmidt any day over Zito.

I agree. I like Schmidt and I have visions of Zito getting whiplash having to look back at the homers he'll give up when the wind is blowing out at Wrigley.

I too prefer Jason Schmidt over Barry Zito. I think Schmidt could be enticed with a 3 year guaranteed, 4th year auto vest contract. Zito will probably accept no less than a 5 year deal, and will probably get a 6 year deal.

I think it's fair to say (based on my sources and observations) that Jim Hendry and Scott Boras have a very good relationship. It's the owner on the other side of town that can't stand Boras. Boras clients don't scare Hendry away. What scares Hendry (Derrek Lee probably being the exception) is anyone wanting more than a 4 year deal, whether he's a Boras client or not.

The Red Sox, Yanks, Angels, Texas and Dodgers don't have a problem with Boras either Hoops and they will be the big spenders in the Zito/Schmidt lotto IMO.

I'd be very surprised if the Red Sox made a serious pitch for Zito - it'll cost them a ton of money and I don't think he's a very good fit for Fenway. They have some good young arms and although Schilling is on the back side of his career, I just don't see them getting in a bidding war for Zito.

Why wouldn't the Giants resign Schmidt? I must admit I pay absolutely no attention to that pitiful organization.

Out of curiousity, where did that come from? It made me laugh because I wasn't expecting it.

Cross him off the list. Yankees and Red Sox looking for his services, Boras his agent. Forget it. Yankees-Red Sox bidding war.

Don't count out the Angels and Dodgers seeing as both have been known to shell out big money for free agents (re: Vlad, Furcalholic) in the past. I realize that Boras is Zito's agent but he might take a little less from a West Coast team to stay in the warm weather.

As much as I would like to have Zito, I don't think the Cubs should pay him what he is going to command.

Ah, the A.J. trade as well as their infatuation with veterans.

I don't know if the Angels will go after Zito. They do have some pretty good young pitching with Weaver and Santana, Joe Saunders could be in that rotation next year too and is a good looking prospect. I think they will be looking more for a big bat, however if they do have to give up Santana for that bat, which they don't want to do, then they may go after a pitcher....but then they may not be able to afford it.

Gotcha. I was thinking it might be Barry Bonds related.
