Cross him off the list. Yankees and Red Sox looking for his services, Boras his agent. Forget it. Yankees-Red Sox bidding war.

Don't count out the Angels and Dodgers seeing as both have been known to shell out big money for free agents (re: Vlad, Furcalholic) in the past. I realize that Boras is Zito's agent but he might take a little less from a West Coast team to stay in the warm weather.

As much as I would like to have Zito, I don't think the Cubs should pay him what he is going to command.

I don't know if the Angels will go after Zito. They do have some pretty good young pitching with Weaver and Santana, Joe Saunders could be in that rotation next year too and is a good looking prospect. I think they will be looking more for a big bat, however if they do have to give up Santana for that bat, which they don't want to do, then they may go after a pitcher....but then they may not be able to afford it.

Good point.

I agree that I would rather take Schmidt than Zito, hoping Schmidt will basically take a similar contract to the one Maddux is leaving. Wood buyout + Maddux + Pierre = 24 million off the books. Im thinking that should be able to land us Schmidt and Carlos Lee. And even though I'm personally against it, you can probably throw in Walker's salary into the treasure fund too .. although that means you now have to look for a 2nd baseman.

Here's an update from SI.com

• Speaking of Zito, a friend of his said the pitcher wants to go to a big market "so he could sell his music,'' and believes he would most prefer one of three teams: 1) Dodgers (his parents live in the Los Angeles area), 2) Mets, 3) Yankees.

Like most others in this thread, I really don't see the Cubs as having the slightest chance at Zito. On another note, "so he could sell his music" ? Never heard that as a negotiation point. :)

It's so tough to sell your music in California...

Forgot about the Mets as a potential suitor.
