Juan Pierre extension watch

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if a lot of team will be in the market for CF next year. I'm just wondering if Pierre would want to see what the FA market offers for his services and if it isn't what he expected he would sign a 1-year deal with the Cubs to try to have a better year and drive up his value.

I'm sorry, there's no way they can extend Pierre after this season. $50 he's gone by July 31st.

I'd pay $50 to see him gone by July 31st.

Are you KIDDING!? After that HOMER he hit for us!?

You're right. He saved us dude.

You're obviously forgetting this is the Cubs we're talking about. If they can extend Hendry and talk about extending Baker, and extend Rusch and Perez before the season, they can extend Pierre as well.

I'm starting to wonder if it might be advisable to try Jones in CF if Pie isn't ready in 2007. That is of course if they could pick up some significant bats in the corner OF spots. Jones production actually becomes pretty admirable if he's in CF.

My guess is he can't/won't do it though.

Here's my dillusional (pre-coffee) dream (just let me have my moment):

Walker 2B

Cedeno SS (not ideal in this spot)

D. Lee 1B

Cabrera RF (young arms traded to get him?)

Ramirez 3B

C. Lee LF

Barrett C

Jones CF

Pitcher

Not likely a viable option, but it's an interesting scenario and only requires signing one free agent (C. Lee). Of course, it also required pulling off a trade to bet Cabrera that I don't think Hendry is capable of making.

From Mike Kiley's article today:

Don't be too hasty to insist there is no way the Cubs will re-sign leadoff man Juan Pierre after a difficult first half. He is showing signs of a rebirth with a .276 average in June after hitting .226 in May.

As long as his financial demands aren't out of sight, the Cubs should seriously look at bringing Pierre back. He wants to stay in Chicago.

"I would like to be, if it was in my hands,'' Pierre said. "I know I haven't performed well, but I know I can play. Hopefully, I will be around.''

ugh. I don't want him back for $1 million. But hendry does have to justify giving up 2 very promising pitchers for him.

Actually I can totally see Hendry saying something so fundamentally misquided such as: "We let nomar go last year, and made a mistake - see how much we regret it? We can't let the same thing happen to Slap Nasty."

If you promise Neifi at 2.5 will be gone, i'll take Juan at 1...but that's it.

At this point, I'm not advocating one way or another whether the Cubs should re-sign him or not. I will merely share 5 observations:

(1) Other than Pierre (age 29), the only CFs, who are under age 35 and appear to be free agents after this season are Dave Roberts (34), Mike Cameron (33), Darin Erstad (32), Gary Matthews Jr. (31) and Eric Byrnes (30). Assuming Matthews gets re-signed by Texas, and Hendry has the sense to stay away from Erstad, would it make sense for Hendry to pick Roberts or Cameron over Pierre? In my estimation, it's not a slam dunk given their injury history. For some reason, Hendry stayed away from Byrnes after he was non-tendered last offseason, so I assume he views him as a platoon type of guy.

(2) Through yesterday's game, Juan does have a .342 OBP for the month of June. That's not great, but it is a huge improvement over April and May.

(3) I'm not an expert on the minor leagues, but my sources tell me Felix Pie doesn't project to be a major leaguer in 2007. He still has a lot of things to work on for his swing in their opinion.

(4) Derrek Lee is a huge fan and supporter of Juan Pierre.

(5) Are there realistically any good trade candidates out there? I mean I have heard Carl Crawford's name thrown around, but will Hendry pony up 3 pitchers like he did with Pierre? Doubtful. However, I will say I could see a deal for Andruw Jones - it does look like Atlanta will blow it up after this season.

Are you kidding me?

Anybody who isn't a strong advocate against resigning Pierre just doesn't care about having good players on the Cubs.

This can't even be a topic of discussion if people want to seriously think about how the Cubs can improve.

This is like a freaking recurring nightmare that won't end.

They are killing my love for the Cubs. Killing it.

(To everybody)

Right now....who would you rather be a fan of:

The New York Knicks, or the Chicago Cubs?

The Knicks.

Why? Because I don't give a crap about basketball so it wouldn't hurt so much. Yeah, I know that's cheating.

The Cubs by far.
