Sounds like just speculation from the writer, but I thought it was interesting. I wonder if Hendry is having thoughts about trading Aram.

LA Times[/url]"]Stoneman said he's "having a lot of conversations with other clubs, and we hope that leads to something that can help us."

In addition to Soriano, Tejada and Lee, the Angels have talked to Tampa Bay about outfielder Carl Crawford. Among the other hitters they could pursue are Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell of the Philadelphia Phillies and Aramis Ramirez and Jacque Jones of the Chicago Cubs.

Is this the first time that Ramirez's name has come up in trade speculation? From everything Hendry's said, he sees Ramirez as one of the cornerstones of the Cubs offense for the long term.

I would think this is just speculation on the writer's part, but was curious if anyone has heard anything.

I think the writer just saw Ramirez as a possible free agent and since the Cubs are out of it that he would be a good fit for the Angels. The Angels would be a very nice team to deal with with that minor league system.

During DLee being out, it's pretty obvious that ARam will never be more than he is. He has no speed and often dogs it in the field and on the bases. He could be a better fielder than he shows. He's not even the Scottie Pippen(2nd banana) of the Cubs.

I don't know if Scott Moore will ever be ready to take over as a regular 3rd baseman, but I hate to get rid of ARam unless someone is ready.

Please cite some examples of this. Are you basing that comment on his reputation or what's actually occured this season? Because the games I watched showed Ramirez actually hustling out a few hits this season, which is something he admittedly didn't do last season.

He's made 2 errors this season. His fielding hasn't been a problem at all. What he has done is struggle mightily without protection in the lineup. He's pressed, and swung at bad pitches. He's not a player you trade unless you are getting a very productive ML player in return.

He has done it a few times this season and it has been noticeable enough for Brenly (and others) to call him out on it. ie He hit a ball recently at home that he assumed was an out but it fell in. The cameras showed him not hustling out of the box and as a consequence, he barely made it into second base. It is possible that, even with his speed, he could have made third base if he'd been going hard all the way. I will also say that for stretches this year he has hustled all the way down the line; Baker claimed he spoke with him about doing so. The problem is, he doesn't consistently run.

Did you see the game where ARam got hit in the head with a pop fly? Lost in the sun, did he? Ya right. Got an error did he? Nope. Stats lie and don't tell the whole story.

ARam's rep has been he has periods of attention lapses and doesn't hustle much. He shuffles to first at times and seems lackadaiscal. He had the same rep in Pittsburgh, now it shows again.

Agreed, I don't want to trade him because even average 3rd basemen are hard to find. That's why I asked about Scott Moore. It would be a hard call and Hendry would have to be blown away by a deal and have someone in place ready to go. You watcha Joe Crede or Scott Rolen and ARam isn't close.

You want a guy like Crede? The Cubs have nobody that could fill the role.

I think ARam plays harder when the team is doing well and gets a little lazy when the team struggles.

I don't think Aram is comfortable being "the Man" on the team. I think he plays (and hits) better when he is considered the 2nd or 3rd best hitter on the team.

Do you see Aramis exercising his out clause with the season he's having?

A lot of different sources have him down as a free agent and that's why I wrote that. I assume the writer may have seen one or he sees him as a guy who only has a year left in his deal and the Angels can get him either by paying his whole salary and not sending prospects or having the Cubs pay some cash and send some decent prospects to Chicago.

If his numbers stay as is, possibly not, but if they continue on the path that his June numbers have taken, I could easily see it happen. The question is does he think he can do better than a 2 year $22.5 million contract with an $11.5 million mutual option that kicks in with relatively easy to reach games played goals. If he thinks he can get a 3/$36m or 4/$48, he'd be wise to take the out. And it's not hard to imagine a team throwing that kind of money around if he keeps hitting like he has in June.

Also, could he just want out of Chicago? It's a depressing situation. If he doesn't see things getting better, he might want out.

I want out but they keep pulling me back in.

He may also wait to see how the Baker scenario plays out. Whether he loves him or hates him, it may effect his decision.

Trade Aram for one of Angels big time prospects, he opts out at the end of the season and signs back with the Cubs

I've always wondered why things like that don't happen a lot more often in sports. The Cubs could have got Soriano for Sosa and resigned him if they did that. I'd just throw in an extra 2 or 3 mil to the contract to get the player to do it. If he liked playing for your team and wanted to win, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. He might even get a ring out of it with his temporary team.

I have to imagine that it would make life very difficult for the GM doing the trade because everyone would question his motivations for trading. And I can't imagine the player would come out smelling like roses either. Very deceptive practice.
