On the radio and on Cubs.com they have talked about how Lee has already taken batting practice and felt good. And even mentioned talks of him possibly even coming back this weekend series?! WHAT!? I thought Lee was atleast 2 weeks away, now it looks like he is coming along real well.

The even funnier thing is no one is talking about it here. So I thought I'd post it. I don't want him rushed back, but at the same time, I can't wait to see him play again. .

"It'll be soon," he said. "But I'm not going to put a date on it."

Lee took batting practice Tuesday and reported no problems.

"It feels good," he said. "No setbacks."

Rain in Cleveland forced the Cubs to take batting practice indoors Wednesday, and Lee had yet to hit when he talked to reporters.

"Hitting in the cage is, as far as the wrist is concerned, the same thing," Lee said. "We'll see how it feels tomorrow and go from there."

Manager Dusty Baker was reluctant to fuel speculation Lee would return to action this weekend against the Twins. Baker said he didn't want to send Lee back to the plate without first seeing live pitching.

"Right now, we're still trying to decide if he needs to go out and get some live pitching," Baker said. "We'll make that decision pretty soon, probably by Friday."

Lee had previously said he wanted to avoid a rehab stint in the Minor Leagues, even for a game or two. But Baker acknowledged that was still an option.

"I think it's necessary," Baker said. "We've talked about it. We're going to make a decision on Friday. We'll let you know something by Friday, after he has a couple more days of BP here and we see how he feels."

Right, they are already saying they will "let us know" on Friday. Wow I didn't think Lee should be back THIS soon. I mean, they are gonna "let us know", something on Friday.

And in addition. Can I get that Seinfeld game on Nintendo Wii?

After saying repeatedly he didn't intend to go on a minor-league rehab stint, Derrek Lee agreed to play at Triple-A Iowa this weekend before returning to the Cubs.

Iowa plays host to Omaha this weekend, and Lee could play there Saturday and Sunday before returning to the Cubs on Monday at Wrigley Field when they begin a homestand against Milwaukee.

"It's probably the smart thing to do," Lee said. "I've been out for two months. Batting practice is a great test, but there's still no test like the game."

Thank Kent for that! I was worried he'd come back with his timing all screwed up because the Cubs decided to rush him back in a futile attempt to make a run.

At least this will get him some meaningful reps against a lower level of competition.

Len & Bob were even eluding to it last night.

It appears there are more than just some nsbb members who are suspicious the Cubs might be rushing Lee back. Or even that Lee might be rushing himself back.

They better hope and pray it turns out O.K.

I don't necessarily think they're doing this consciously (because it would be absolutely abhorrent), but if I'm Hendry/Baker, then its a no-lose situation for me:

1. Lee comes back, team does well, I get to say "I told you so."

2. Lee comes back, team doesn't do well, I can say he wasn't ready and wanted to come back too soon. Its not like Baker isn't always willing to throw players under the bus.

3. Lee comes back, gets reinjured, I've got a built-in injury excuse. Again.

Derrek Lee comes back.

Breaks his wrist.

He's never the same again.

BigSlick shoots himself.

I know he got hurt after only a few weeks, but they were winning games when he was healthy. 8)

seriously, do you think the Cardinals would just keep right on rolling without Pujols?

I bet a nickle that Murton gets sent down to make room for him.

nah, they'll DFA Walker

I think it'll probably be Nevin because 1B is pretty much all he can play. With all of the cash the Rangers sent over, the Cubs really only owe Nevin $375k for the rest of the season so it'll be a cheap cut.

hard to maintain with a hole concerning the likes of a Lee or Pujols. Those guys are amazing talents and the absence is gonna be felt.
