D-Backs Designate Russ Ortiz for Assignment

Recommended Posts

That was a pretty bad signing. He'll end up in someone's rotation for league minimum.

When I see how much money the medium market D-Backs are willing to eat for an unproductive player, I can't figure out why big market Hendry won't do the same with the equally unproductive Glendon Rusch, who has one less year and significantly less money owed to him than Ortiz. Must be that lefty thing - different topic for a different day I guess.

I don't think Hendry would admit he made a mistake. Also, I think the fact that Wood and Prior might not come back could have something to do with it.

Funny, that's the first thing that came to my mind. I'm hoping this and 1 more quality start by Marmol = Glendon DFA'd when Prior is activated. Eyre and Ohman are enough in the pen.

Prepare yourselves for the "low risk, high reward" false justification.

with a little "change of scenery," "proven veteran," and "post-season experience" talk sprinkled in.

But he started in Game 7 of the World Series? Doesn't that count for som.....never mind...the Cubs ain't making the WS.

Seems to me that Hendry prides himself as a player's GM. I don't think he wants to humiliate a player for a short-tem gain. He may be trying to keep a good rep with future free agents.

if that potential free agent doesn't sign w/ the cubs b/c he is concerned about the possibility of getting DFA'ed once he goes in the toilet...well, i can live w/ that.

Yeah, agents know this is a business. They may not pubicly ever admit it when a client sucks but I doubt they would hold a grudge against an organization that released a crappy player.

Agreed. They can't afford to torpedo their relationships with an entire franchise over one junk player.

0-5, 7.54 ERA, 2.16 WHIP

sadly, that would be an improvement over Fat Bastard

Dude! that is SO true! it kind of would be a upgrade! well you know FAT Hendry will go HARD after him! :x

speechless

if Arizona can DFA Ortiz and his contract then... why can the cubs do that to Rusch?

again, I am Speechless! :x

What I don't understand about this line of reasoning is that to me it would seem to be worse to be reminded you made a mistake every time Dusty rolls him out there than to admit you made a mistake, correct it, and not have to think about that particular mistake ever again.

Yes UBlink common sense would say that but since when is that something Hendry has used lately?

For some reason when Ortiz was dfa'd I am guessing Hendry wasnt thinking "Well if they can do it for 22 mill we could do it for 5."

I am guessing it was more like "HHMMM, we could get him for close to the league minimum and Dusty has had some success with him"
