Cubs.com"]The Cubs have agreed to terms with 14 of the 47 players the organization selected in last week's First-Year Player Draft, including the seventh-round selection, infielder Steven Clevenger from Chipola Junior College in Maryland.

Three of the Cubs' other first 10 selections have come to terms, including right-handed pitchers William Muldowney of the University of Pittsburgh (eighth round) and Jacob Renshaw of Ventura College (10th round); and outfielder Matthew Camp of North Carolina State (13th round).

The Cubs had a first-round pick, Tyler Colvin of Clemson, and did not have another selection until the fifth round.

Also agreeing to terms was left-hander Jeremy Papelbon, younger brother of Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon. Jeremy was the 569th player selected.

So of the 14, we know of Clevenger, Muldowney, Renshaw, Camp, Kopach, and Papelbon. That is only 6, 7 if they include Samardzija. Who else has been confirmed?

EDIT: I just found out the 16th rounder Blake Parker has signed; Link

Thanks, where on cubs.com did you find it?

I also just found this article that says our 9th round pick Cliff Andersen is expected to skip his college commitments and sign with the Cubs sometime this week.

Is he the guy who dropped due to his college committment?

Yeah. He was ranked a little past 100 by BA and was thought to have a solid commitment to Arizona.

Also, courtesy of Carrie Muskat:

Chris Huseby, a right-handed pitcher at Martin County High School in Florida, threw on the side for Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild on Saturday. Huseby was the Cubs' 11th-round pick in the First-Year Player Draft.

He had committed to Auburn, but he likely will postpone school and play pro ball. Huseby has yet to sign a contract with the Cubs.

The 6-foot-7 right-hander also is coming off Tommy John surgery, which he had in March 2005.

"[My arm] feels good -- it feels strong," Huseby said. "I have to work on my endurance and get my arm strength back."

Being at Wrigley Field was pretty cool.

"This blows my mind," he said. "I never thought I'd be out here at Wrigley Field, especially out of high school. It's quite an experience."

From what I've read, my favorite prospects after the 5th round have signed or are close to signing (Renshaw - 10th round, Huseby - 11th, Rundle - 14th).

Just released from the Cubs Media Room:

CUBS AGREE IN PRINCIPLE WITH

FIFTH ROUND SELECTION JEFF SAMARDZIJA

Sunday, June 18, 2006

The Chicago Cubs have agreed in principle with their fifth round selection in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, right-handed pitcher Jeff Samardzija from the University of Notre Dame. The contract is subject to the approval of Major League Baseball.

Samardzija went 8-2 with a 4.33 ERA (47 ER/97.2 IP) in 15 starts for the Fighting Irish this season. He closed out the 2006 campaign with three straight outings of 8.0 or more innings while striking out 61 and walking 37 on the season. Samardzija allowed just three home runs in 97.2 innings of work.

Samardzija owns a 21-6 record with a 3.82 ERA (102 ER/240.1 IP) in 50 career games (31 starts) for Notre Dame. The Valparaiso, Ind., native is also a star wide receiver on the Notre Dame football team, having caught a season-record 15 touchdowns last season.

Overall, Chicago has agreed to terms with five of its first 10 selections and nine of their first 21 picks.

ESPN.com"]Samardzija's deal is for five years and worth up to $7.25 million, a source close to Samardzija told ESPN's Joe Schad.

...

Samardzija will be able to play at Notre Dame this fall. His plan is to play professional baseball and football after graduating Notre Dame and he is a possible first round draft choice in the next NFL draft.

The deal is backloaded and Samrdzija would have to continue to play baseball in order to approach the maximum value of the contract.

so Samardzija is worth 3/4 of Mark Prior coming out of college?

Interesting.

They had to do something like that to even get him to sign. I like this deal...we won't be out much if he sticks to football...and if he plays he could be well worth the money...

Agreed. If he picks football, the Cubs are out only 500k, but if he picks baseball, then they could possibly get the bigget steal of the 06 draft. This is definately a worthwhile gamble.

Baseball America"]One source indicated the size of the bonus--clearly above the slot recommended by Major League Baseball--created friction between the Cubs and MLB, with commissioner Bud Selig becoming personally involved in the negotiations.

In an interview right after the draft, Cubs scouting director Tim Wilken indicated the Cubs and Orioles both saw Samardzija at his best in an outing during the Big East Conference tournament. Wilken said Samardzija repeatedly pumped his fastball into the 97-99 mph range, up significantly from the regular season, when he sat in the 91-94 mph range. Samardzija showed a much better slider in that outing, using a higher arm slot to stay on top of the pitch better.

The inconsistent quality of his breaking ball was one question that prompted Samardzija, a consensus first-round talent, to fall into the fifth round. He had success for the Irish, going 21-6, 3.82 in three seasons (including 8-2, 4.33 this spring), but his strikeout rate was low for a pitcher with power stuff. He had 61 strikeouts in 98 innings in 2006 and 159 strikeouts (and 84 walks) in 240 career innings.

...

"Anyone who thinks I'm not serious about baseball, just come out and watch me play," Samardzija said. "Anyone that has come and see me practice and pitch in a game and see how I approach the game would completely prove all that wrong.

"With the situation I have in football, if I didn't love baseball, I would have stopped playing a long time ago. It's not really a question of whether I'm going to play. I love baseball and am going to be playing as long as a I can. My favorite (sport) is whatever season it is."

Now that Clemson has been eliminated from the CWS, how long till Tyler Colvin signs?

I heard this Drew Rundle kid could be a sleeper/keeper. Can anybody give a quick rundown on him? He sounds intriguing.

Junior left fielder Tyler Colvin did not put his glove away for long.

Colvin, the No. 13 overall pick in this year’s draft, has agreed to terms with the Chicago Cubs and will sign a contract Tuesday, his grandfather, Jerry Colvin Sr., said.

Colvin is scheduled to take batting practice with the major league team before departing Wednesday for the Cubs’ short-season Class A team in Boise, Idaho.

Sweet! Now if they sign Rundle, I'll be fairly happy.

They signed him last week and he's supposedly down in Mesa. I have a list of all the signings in the first post of the thread.
