Sweet! Now if they sign Rundle, I'll be fairly happy.

They signed him last week and he's supposedly down in Mesa. I have a list of all the signings in the first post of the thread.

Even sweeter. ;)

I am not an expert on drafts, but it seems to me that the cubs are signing a very high percentage of their pickings and signing them quickly. Am I right?

We are getting guys signed fairly quickly IMO. With no 2/3/4 picks, the Cubs need to get what they can from the rest of the picks. Getting guys like Renshaw, Huseby, Andersen, Rundle, Samardzija, etc signed quickly and having them begin playing as soon as possible will help minimize the loss of those 3 early round picks. They are doing pretty good so far. We signed a couple of talented HS OFers that could help offset the loss of those picks in Rundle and Andersen.

Even the Cubs recognize that they have a depleted minor league system especially in comparison forn years past. So they are making sure they get guys signed and signed quickly in order to re stock.

Exactly right WooWoo. If nothing else, by signing a bunch of guys with decent talent from the 5-15 round range, we are almost sure to have a few prospects pan out just because of pure numbers. It also helps that some of them were probably decent enough to go higher and still signed with us.

Ryan Crawford"]After watching Cubs pitchers hit balls into the bleachers, Tyler Colvin got to take his first swings at Wrigley Field.

Colvin, the Cubs' first-round pick in this year's First-Year Player Draft, was on hand to take batting practice with the team on Tuesday. He hit in the same group as Mark Prior and Greg Maddux, among others.

...

Colvin hopes to hit a few more into the bleachers in the future, but for the moment he'll be playing his baseball farther west. Colvin signed Tuesday and will receive a bonus of $1.475 million. He'll head to Boise, Idaho on Wednesday morning to meet up with the Cubs' Class A affiliate.

At Boise, Colvin will look to get a better feel for a wooden bat, despite showing some prowess with one on Tuesday.

"I think going to wood is the big adjustment," Colvin said. "As long as I put good swings on it, it shouldn't be that big of a factor. I just have to be more controlled at the plate."

Just having guys from round 5-15 all signed and in camp does not come close to ensuring a few will pan out. Quantity does not equal quality.

No it doesn't ensure anything. But there is a heckuva lot better chance to have a good prospect or two come from those rounds if we sign 10 or so guys rather than 5-ish.

Clarification on previous articles: Colvin will join Boise and play his first pro game on Thursday, not today.

I was disappointed when I didn't see him in Boise's line-up on Wednesday. :(

Baseball American has the Huseby signing but still shows Rundle as not being signed. Do we have absolute confirmation that Rundle has signed? From watching this board, Rundle was supposed to have signed before Huseby, which would logically mean that if BA has the Huseby signing they'd also have the Rundle signing.

I believe the article about Rundle stated he was going to sign with the Cubs, but didnt confirm that he had actually signed. I'd say they are probably still negotiating?

Drew Rundle, Oregon's top high school baseball prospect, signed a contract with the Chicago Cubs over the weekend, passing on a college career with the University of Arizona.

He's probably working out in the Mesa facilities. He was drafted out of HS and was considered pretty raw.

How many top 15 pick college OFers start in Short Season? Meh...

He's got talent but he's still also rather raw. I think that he's at Boise because any changes in his swing will be easier to implement there against lower talent than at say Peoria or Daytona. He'll probably have good production while there but I don't think we'll see any sort of vast improvement until the offseason where he can start working more seriously on changing his swing mechanics.

BA finally confirms in a story mainly on the Huseby signing:

BA.com"]The Cubs, who didn't have selections in rounds two, three or four last month, also have signed Oregon prep outfielder Drew Rundle. The Bend High grad and Arizona recruit signed for a reported $500,000. He has reported to the Rookie-level Arizona League, where Huseby will soon join him.

Quite a few. Quentin and Conor Jackson both started there, for instance. And they were much more polished coming out of school.

This all may be true and good. Still, it seems rather odd to spend a high pick on a guy who lacks RF arm, CF speed, HR power, and plate patience, but who is drafted because he has a nice swing. If in fact his nice swing isn't actually very nice and needs to be reconstructed. If a guy's swing needs to be reconstructed anyway, then what was it that you draft him that high for?

Hopefully you'll be right, they'll tune up his swing and he'll be a genuine hitter next year, or perhaps later this very summer. Still, not a very encouraging way to get going.

I couldn't agree more. This entire year starting from the free-agency period to this very second has been a Cub fan's worst nightmare.

At the rate things are going the Cubs organization won't hit rock bottom for a couple more years.

Has anyone heard word as to whether the Cubs plan on signing any more of their draft picks or are they pretty much done. I always like to see them sign as many of their first 25 picks as possible. 17,18,20, 22 and 25 are still out there.
