Today's Baseball Prospectus Stat of the Day lists the worst 5 offenses in the NL by VORP:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/

The Cubs have scored about 10 runs more than you'd expect from a team full of replacement players.

The next worst team is the Astros, but they're at 43 runs above replacement, more than 4 times what the Cubs have managed.

Yes, we already knew that the offense was bad, but the gap between us and the rest of the league is pretty shocking.

The Dodgers lead the NL with a team VORP of 125. Cincy and Milwaukee are 2 and 3.

Do we really need stats to say how bad this team is? They suck from A-Z, from the Trib to the bat Boy, heck, even the peanut vendors suck this year. All you have to do is watch them attempt to play :!:

Wow, 500 posts \:D/

I just figured Pierre's stats. He has created about 23 runs while using 201 outs. That's 3.05 Runs per 27 outs. That is similar to a pitcher having about a 2.75 ERA. It's roughly as bad, probably a little worse, than Patterson's 2005 season. Way to go Jim!

Did anyone really think Pierre was going to be this pathetic? I, too did not like the trade but, I expected vast improvement over Patterson in the lead-off spot.

I think most of us feel the same -- he wasn't "the answer", but there's no way it could be worse than what we had.

I expected improvement, but not vast improvement. Pierre was a lifetime 87 OPS+ player, Corey was 81. But Corey still had the potential for upside, while the one dimensional and past his priem Pierre did not.

Worst than patterson...no. I thought pierre would provide good defense and get on base. I know he's not a great hitter, but i thought he'd make more noise than corey (hard not to do). What sucks is Nolasco has a better record than all the cubs starters...on the marlins of all teams....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Can someone please explain the stat VORP to me? I feel so behind in the world of stats when these terms are thrown out there that mean nothing to me.

I think I understand VORP even less after reading that.

Very simply, VORP is a cumulative stat that measures runs added by hitting only (no base running or defense included). The runs are those added above what a AAA or fringe bench player making little money would be estimated to add. 10 points of VORP (or 10 runs) is roughly equal to a win. So Pujols this year has a VORP of 38.6 - he's been 38 runs better than a replacement AAA 1st baseman, versus Todd Walker with a 9.1. And you can be below replacement level - hence Juan Pierre's ability to be 6.3 runs below a replacement player. VORP is added (or subtracted) after each game.

I don't need stats. I can tell with my eyes alone that this team is horrible.

Yeah, but using stats it becomes easier to compare how horrible this team is with horrible teams of years long ago.
