But he K'd 5 in 3.2 innings!

Ok, ok, so a high K rate isn't always a sign of high quality.

Cubs starters by VORP:

Z 23.6

Marshall 10.9

Maddux 8.0

Wood -0.1

Williams -3.9

Guzman -4.2

Rusch -6.4

Hill -9.3

Wretched -- there's just no kind way to say it. Guess I'd bring back Jerome -- anyone know how he's doing?

Horribly, I believe.

Well, then he'd fit right in.

I'd bring back Hill and see if a string of consecutive starts will help him out. Otherwise, wait out a month or so and I think Guzman will be ready.

Im a big Hendry fan but I have to question him on what the hell he seen in Rusch to give him a 2 year deal.

He saw a lefty with a high K rate who ended up beating the stuffing out of the league in 2004. I don't blame Hendry for rolling the dice here, but they've clearly come up snake-eyes.

That's all well and good, but he gave out the 2 year contract after the 2005 season, not 2004.

While I'll admit it was a decent year by pitching standards, Rusch in no way beat the stuffing out of the league in 2004.

seriously. how many more chances does he get?

add up the number of chances given to guzman, hill, and ryu. take that number times rusch's era. take that number times rusch's weight...that's how many chances he gets.

Agreed. Pierre, Wood, Prior, Rusch - a lot of snake eyes this year. Of those four, only Prior should be on the team next year.

Best case scenario (for now) is that Wood is fine and Marmol takes Rusch's rotation spot. Worst case, well I think we're living that as we speak.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Marmol could step in as a starter coming up if Wood can't pitch?

Lem mentioned this as well.

I'll admit I haven't followed Marmol's minor league progress, but from the stuff I've seen thus far, he's got electric stuff. Why not give him a chance? Certainly can't be any worse than Rusch!

You can make a case that Estes is better than Rusch.

i hate rusch. i just do. I never cared for the guy when we first got him, and he has done nothing to improve my perception, save a couple of nice games in 2004. this was a play-off caliber team when they signed him, WTH were you thinking when you hooked this guy up Hendry? SERIOUSLY?

Emotions getting the better of you? I feel the same way, but logically, you have to hold on to Rusch until the deadline.

He's a lefty, with some upside. Hold him until then, and trade him in the eleventh hour for a decent prospect. Who cares if the Cubs pick up that salary (or most of it), just get something for him. Believe me, there will be takers out there for Rusch. To DFA him would be a mistake - bad business, if you will.
