He will make a miraculous recovery and be back in 2 weeks while Derek Lee will break his wrist again tripping on the dougout stairs. The Cubs luck sucks!

well i guess this can be used as another way to show how bad the cubs organization is if the cardinals don't play horribly offensively over that time. we shall see.

the cards will probably do what the cubs should have done and trade for craig wilson, who will then be moved to LF after he fills in nicely at 1st, and the Cards don't really miss a beat.

wouldnt it be somethin if the cards fall hard back to earth and the cubs get really good and win the division. not likely but the season isint even close to bein over

It isn't over, but we're 11.5 games back, and not really all that good. Unless Prior, Wood, and Lee all come back and play 100%, and the Cardinals run out of magic pixie dust that makes career minor leaguers .300 hitters, we don't have a shot at the division.

Which will be a lot easier to do now that Sean Casey is back, Wilson is a lot more expendable and it is the month of June and not April.

I agree, the Cubs should have traded for Wilson a long time ago, but how realistic would that have been?

Is it unlikely the Cubs win the division? You bet. Is it possible? Of course.

That's all oldstyle81 was saying.

How likely is it that Pierre stays this cold all year long? How likely is it that Ramirez never heats up? Is anyone on the Cubs playing way over their heads right now such that we should expect a huge drop-off from them besides Tony Womack who will be a back-up now that Nevin has been acquired?

Prior is two weeks away. Lee is 2-3 weeks away maybe less. And let's not forget the possible contributions of Wade Miller. The Cubs still have a plethora of arms in Iowa that are very close to being ready. If people can just stay healthy, Hendry should have some talent with which to trade at the deadline, especially arms. No team in the majors stands to improve as much as the Cubs will over the next several weeks.

Do they have an uphill climb ahead of them? Yeah. Can they climb it? Yes. Will they? That's why they play the games.

On June 3rd of last year, the eventual National League Champs were 13 games under .500. The Cubs are 10 games under. Anything can happen.

Pujols is one of the classiest guys in baseball. I hate the Cards and I hate Pujols, but its tough to see one of the good guys go down. At least the Cards will know what we went though with Lee

Yes, they will -- Pujols injury is a disaster for the Cards.

Top five Cards "hitters" by VORP, 2006:

Pujols 38.9

Rolen 16.3

Eckstein 15.6 (!)

Spiezio 7.8 (!)

Luna 7.4 (!)

Guys marked with a (!) sold their souls at a Mississippi crossroads in exchange for some offensive production. It won't last -- Satan is not known for his patience.

This is it; last and best chance to get back into this thing. We have until the ASB; if we can cut it to 5 or 6 by then, you never know.

Saw this on a Cards forum... The SI curse strikes again.

Funny how it never affected MJ.

So with Pujols and Carpenter hurt, will Dusty not get extended if the Cards don't tank a la the Cubs?

Dusty will be extended tommorow if we win today. Hendry is probably thinking that 2 sweeps of the Cards in one year is like winning the World Series for the Cubs. Definitely deserves a 2-year extension.

It will be interesting to see if/when the Cards are able to maintain their lead with out Pujols and people start pointing that out to Dusty/Hendry. They'll have to come up with some more excuses, which is what they do best.

Pujols may be classy in the sense that he doesn't run his mouth. BUT, he sure does like to admire his home runs and that irritates the piss out of me.

The problem with that theory is that everybody now knows the Cards are desparate for offensive help with Edmonds/Pujols out for a period time. Just like everybody knew the Cubs were deaparate when Lee was out. So, my guess any significant offensive player the Cards might be interested in, either Wainwright or Reyes will be the first name out mouth by the other team.
