It seems to me that Marshall is putting up a solid effort every other time out. He hasn't been spectacular by any means but I think overall his performance is encouraging. The fact that teams are not continuing to crush him leads me to believe that when he is locating, which seems to be more often than not, he is an effective major league pitcher. Thoughts from anyone who has a better knowledge of the situation than I do?

I think Marshall is good and he should be one of our rotation pitchers the rest of the year and next year unless he starts getting rocked everytime. He's had two really bad starts, and the rest have been solid to great. Plus he's 6 foot 7, HES HUGE.

Good observation. I think he does a nice job locating, as well. His achilles heel is his inability to throw his curve ball with any consistency at all.

You're right though....I think he does a very nice job of locating and seems to battle pretty well out there. I like his toughness.

In his 2 really bad starts, he was having a hell of a time locating his pitches........

I don't know what this means in terms of young pitchers and their future, but ALL of his troubles have come on the road... including todays game, here are the home/away splits.

Home

5 GS, 2 W, 1 L, 30.2 IP, 18 H, 7 ER, 22 K, 10 BB, 1 HR, 0.91 WHIP, 2.05 ERA,

Away

5 GS, 1 W, 2 L, 23.0 IP, 26 H, 23 ER, 16 K, 16 BB, 3 HR, 1.83 WHIP, 9.00 ERA

I'm thinking/hoping that eventually he'll become more comfortable on the road and reduces those gaudy numbers. But you never can tell...

Edit: used slightly wrong home IP figure, now fixed.

I agree with bring stone back's assessment about his curveball. He's a little like a Rich Hill but with a better pitch arsenal in that aspect.

He's shown that he has the talent to be a productive starter for this organization, and once he becomes consistent I think he'll be an above-average to good starter. Let's hope Dusty keeps him in the rotation if/when Wood and Prior and maybe Miller become healthy.

Marshall would make a good back end of the rotation guy. He has a few above average pitches, but no great pitches that could make him an ace or #2 starter.

It's hard to find a good brat on the road?

For a young off-speed pitcher to have early success in Wrigley Field is a good thing IMO. His 2 bad starts were in SF and in Florida which are 2 pitcher's parks. I think at this point in his career he's having trouble adjusting; both to the speed of the game and to hitters who have already seen tape of him and know sort of what to expect. This is fairly typical of young pitchers, once he settles down I think he'll be pretty good.

It should be noted that if the Cubs are smart, they will shut Marshall down by mid-August at latest, because he's only thrown over 100 IP in a year once (2003).

But we know that will never happen under Dusty's watch.

Overall, I've been impressed with Marshall so far. He's had a couple rough starts, like any young pitcher will, but he's shown the ability to get out of jams. I would say he's going to have a bright future, but he's on the Cubs so we should take bets on how long it will be before his first DL trip. I have 3 months.

Had no idea....good point. Knowing that, I think he'd be better off being limited to the number of innings he can throw his last 8-10 outings instead of just shutting him down in August.

Thats unsettling...

Looks like we're gonna ruin another great pitching prospect :x

They've kept his pitch count pretty low (partially because he's been rocked in a few starts), but I do agree with the assessment that they might want to shut him down soon. Hopefully they've learned something from Dusty's overuse of Prior and Wood.

I think Marshall being less than dominant is going to prevent him from being too overused. With Prior's first full campaign, I can see how it would be really hard to not let him throw more. Also, the team is going nowhere. When Prior was coming back from the Giles incident, those were some big stakes games.
