so it's all murton's fault then?

No worries, Womack is on the way.

Cubs do need more speed.

And more second basemen! Here, I redesigned the baseball diamond so it only consists of a pitcher's mound and second bases.

It looks like they're crapping on the field. I think that's a good strategy, personally.

It would be more efficient than what they are doing on the field now.

I consider myself the unluckiest fan on the face of the Earth.

so if they cut the grass really low, does that mean that juan will just ground out to second quicker? why not, it'll get it over faster.

Pierre will be out by 2 steps instead of 1.

seriously. why does the length of the grass even matter? we have a team that is last offensively in obp and first in pitchers giving up walks, yet people want to talk about cutting grass?

[allen iverson]we're talking about cutting grass, man. not a game, we're talking about grass. [/allen iverson]

well, for some reason, I could definitely see iverson talking about grass. or maybe i'm thinking of ricky williams. meh, probably both of them.

MacPhail has confirmed our worst fear. We root for a team that is absolutely terrible. Worse than that, the people in charge of the team have no idea why the team is terrible. Worst of all, the entire minor league system is stocked with players reflecting the same broken philosophy that has got the team where it is in the first place. It's seriously time to look for something else to do in the summer, unless you enjoy watching what soon could turn into a hybrid of the Royals and the Pirates.

Quoted for truth.

Also, I'm drunk.

Q: What are some of your overall observations of this Cubs team?

A: I think the element that needs to improve as soon as possible is runners in scoring position. We are 30th among 30 teams in our batting average with runners in scoring position. You are not going to win many games unless you become more productive in those situations. And the stat that is most alarming to me is with two outs and runners in scoring position, as a team we are hitting under .150. There are times when you just need the big hit, the critical hit to ease the pressure on the other aspects.

you know what else the cubs rank last in? pretty much EVERY OTHER OFFENSIVE CATEGORY. it's not luck that the cubs are this bad. this guy CANNOT be this stupid.

Why, oh why did Jim get all these un-clutchy players?

I'd laugh if Andy MacPhail or Jim Hendry brought out the old "sample size" argument in response to that one. ;)

Stop glorifying Kenny Williams. Guy is a total unprofessional. Called Frank Thomas an effing idiot. He's only the best player in club history.

he can't handle personal situations well at all, but I'd take him over Hendry in a heartbeat. He knows how to setup a good team, something Hendry has failed to do.

Not really. He basically caught lightning in a bottle recently. Moneyball paints him as a bumbling idiot, but I guess everyone is compared to Billy Beane.

so much for moneyball. it probably said that dye, thome and contreras were done...

Maybe read the book. Moneyball is about market inefficiencies. Dye's contract at the time was seen as a little much, Contreras for Loaiza was buying low, and Thome was a calculated gamble helped by not wanting to go to arbitration with Rowand. You could argue that these are mostly Beane-type moves. Sorry.

I could have listened to the interview but decided I would get too aggravated if I did and I didn't want a road rage incident. Judging by the comments I made a good move by turning the radio off.

MacPhail and Hendry have been hiding for weeks. For Lewis Black fans, they have joined The Dick Cheney Club of 'great white elk sightings'. They won't appear on any talk show that allows the fans access to them. God forbid we might ask a tough question. He chooses to speak to Kaplan and tired old Fred Mitchell, who is just shuffling along. The Score called MacPhail's office on Thursday and were told that he would never come on the air and be questioned.

Kaplan is no interviewer. He is just a lapdog for the TRIB/WGN Radio/The Cubs and he knows it. His questions were cupcakes and very soft. No follow-up and no real answers. He and Waddle spent alot of time patting each other on the back about 'how tough Kaplan was with Andy'. It was very frustrating.

No questions about how the money is being spent, why were TRIB baseball writers called on the carpet, why this organization has failed to produce everyday players under Andy's regime, at what point does a managerial move have to be made... etc.. I'm sure that many of you would have a ton more questions.

He did about as much as could be done without having Andy walk out on him or putting his job in jeopardy. I understand what you're saying and agree, but the Trib *will* fire people for saying the wrong things and everyone knows it. It's a little much to ask Kap to put his family's livelihood in jeopardy over an interview.

....and they did rip the Cubs for about an hour afterwards. I'm sure that was with permission from the Trib, of course. I'm pretty sure the Trib has been censoring their people for years now. It's just that, since 2003, folks have actually started to care about this ballclub so they're demanding more tough answers.

It will also mean that A Ram will be making more errors and not getting to as many balls. Note to MacPhail, an excuse for the next radio interview in 2 months, when we will be in the cellar by ourself!

Fred is a nice guy, but would never ask a hard question of anyone. He used to be on the Cubs and Bears beat, but that was years ago. Solid writer but for the past few years he simply was writing 'gladhander' columns' which were filler at best. Of all the sports people at the TRIB to interview you, Fred would be the weakest link. I would prefer a Teddy Greenstein or Barry Rozner toask better questions. Was Bruce Miles even approached for an Andy interview?
