Anybody who goes crazy when Wood nibbles should take note of this outing.

5 IP, 71 pitches, 14.2 per inning, 6 k, 0 BB, 5 H. He got beat on 3 HR, which guys give up when they are always in the zone but aren't perfect every time.

I'm fine with Wood's outing today (though I wish it had gone another inning or so). He looked very good aside from the homers of course.

But if the offense doesn't improve, Wood won't matter.

Not trying to be glib, but should we care how he looks or what the results are? Giving up 3 HRs in 5 innings isn't good, even if he struck out 15 batters. That's always been the problem with KW

You should care how he looks, given it was his first game back, results were not the end all. But he walked nobody had a WHIP of just 1.00 and struck out 6 in 5 IP, while averaging just 14.2 pitches per inning. Those results are all very positive.

I don't normally agree with you Goon, but I agree. I'm fine with him today and he'll only get better. I'm excited about his new found control today. Hope he keeps it up.

No...no it hasn't. And yes, considering the amount of time he's been gone, this is like opening day for him. As I recall, Z wasn't too sharp on opening day, and he's doing fine now.

KW's problem has been walks. So the occasional homer or hit scored runs. 2 of the 3 homers were solo. Considering everything, I'm not concerned about Kerry. I'm concerned about the lineup.

With the loss of velocity, I'm concerned.

Isn't velocity the last thing to come back after shoulder surgery?

Boy do I feel for the NSBBers in the bleachers today. I was almost among them, but for my travels for the job eating my holidays.

So did Wood give up on his FB before he got yanked? Maybe the Professor can help with location probs.

Yep and he was still hitting 93-94 MPH today.

The games it's over yet. Hang in there 5 runs isn't insuremountable. I hope the offense at the very least get's Wood off the hook.

When was the last time the Cubs came back from a 5 run deficit?

If only Fred was here.

He had no walks, and 2 of the homers came after what I'm told were uncalled strike 3 pitches. Sounds like he was getting squeezed and grooved a few. I didn't see him though.

Is he at the game? Call Wrigley and have him paged.

I wish the Cubs would show some balls and make a comeback. Everytime they get down early it seems they just go into a shell and give up. This lineup certainly isn't going to help, though.

He was...he's probably to drunk to recognize his own name now though.

And somehow I doubt the Wrigley PA announcer is going to take me seriously when I ask for Fred Hornkohl to be paged...

Too many rally killers in this lineup to comeback from 5 down.

That was my point with the question though. This lineup isn't built for comebacks. It's built for close one or two run ballgames.

Yeah I agree. They need to change there approach and mix things up a bit. You put pressure on the Nat's and they crumble.

Hendry needs to find guys with FIRE! and INTENSITY!

K #6 for Woodrow.

Wood has settled down nicely.

Only problem is that Woody ALWAYS has the tough inning or two when he gets lit up and looks solid the rest of the game

Except for the fact that that's not true, you're dead on.

Which part? That Wood looks solid for the majority of the game or that he always has a bad inning. It just seems like the wheels come off rather quickly for Kerry when he faces adversity.

Neifi leads the league in both categories.

What we are missing is MOXY and GRIT.

No he needs to learn what OBP stands for and apply it.

I don't care whether JJ has been hitting well of late, I still can't stand him. Didn't help when I saw him hit a grounder to strand two guys in scoring position, followed up by lollygagging to No Man's Land to even try for a fielding play the following inning.

Three years of this. If Hendry manages to unload JJ, he will surpass his Hundley coup.
