There were a couple things posted in today's game thread about Prior potentially being back by Memorial Day so I'm wondering if anybody knows if any rehab starts have been scheduled? The main reason I want to know this is because the Iowa Cubs are coming to Sacramento next week from Monday through Thursday and I would like to know if Prior will be making a rehab start there so I can go to the game.

The latest from cubs.com

Arms race: Cubs pitcher Mark Prior did well in his simulated game on Sunday in Mesa, Ariz., and was to throw a side on Tuesday. Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild said he wanted to wait to see how Prior felt after that session before announcing the next step.

Prior is rehabbing from a strained muscle in his right shoulder that sidelined him in March.

I'm going to at least one game anyway (Thursday's are $1 hot dog nights) but if Prior is making a start, my plans might change.

Haha. Imagine if Prior pitched on $1 hot dog night. There would be a whole lot of hot dogs sold that night.

I don't have that much luck. I just know he's going to pitch on Wednesday night when I have a mandatory lab.

I doubt you'll see Prior pitch because if he's at AAA, that'd mean it's more than likely his second rehab start (meaning he'd have to have one in the next few days) and also because the Cubs would prefer to have a home minor league game for the rehab assignment.

I figured as such, mainly the part about pitching in Iowa rather than pitching on the road. But I can always hope.

I hope Prior pitches a game for the Windy City Thunderbolts. I know it would be quite odd for a team to lease out a pitcher to an independent league team for one of his rehabd starts, and quite possibly illegal, but still, it would be pretty cool for me.

I wish the I-Cubs were in Sacramento over the weekend, not Fresno. I'd rather have seen them up there, especially since I have friends in the 916.

Of course it's pointless now since I can't go up to Fresno this weekend either.

I don't see how he'd be back by Memorial Day. He's looking at the first or second week in June if things go well, most likely.

Here's more on his simulated game:

trib[/url]"]Prior update

Mark Prior threw about 50 pitches in a simulated game Sunday in Mesa, Ariz., and may decide Wednesday if he's ready to pitch in a Rookie League game Friday.

"The arm strength is not altogether there," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "But he felt good when he was done."

Wade Miller will throw a simulated game Wednesday in Mesa.

If I were to guess, I'd say that he'll have one more start (whether in Mesa or in rehab) than Wood did. And his rehab assignment would likely start on Memorial Day or later.

That's why I was confused when somebody mentioned in the game thread that he could be back by Memorial Day. I figured the beginning of June at the earliest. If he was going to return by Memorial Day he would have to have made a minor league rehab start already.

CBS Sportsline is speculating (based on a report in the Tribune) that Prior will make a rehab start for Iowa on May 29 and make his debut with the Cubs on June 3.

That's the rumor here in Iowa.

According to Rothschild, Prior will pitch in Mesa against the rookies on Friday and will throw 40-45 pitches/2 or 3 innings. In response to the arm strength issue, he did say that it's definitely headed in the right direction.

If they only go with 1 start in AZ and 2 rehab starts, I'll scratch my head. Are they that desperate to push him faster than Wood (from when Kerry started throwing to rookies)?

According to Cubs.com, Miller will throw to rookies in Mesa on Monday, so hopefully he'll be ready to go around mid-June.

If Prior and Wood stay healthy, what becomes of Sean Marshall when Miller is ready? I guess they did demote Murton last year when he was killing the ball so i doubt they'd have a problem sending Sean to AAA.

They probably haven't decided that yet. I wouldn't mind Marshall spending most of the year in the minors if Miller is going to produce around the same level, but I'm going to guess and say that they give Miller a little more time down on a rehab assignment, giving them more time to figure out what they want to do.

Unless Miller is just lights out awesome, he's expendable (in my book).

I think you risk ruining Marshall if you send him down. He's a doing nothing but boosting his confidence at the major league level. Send him down and there's a good chance he see's it as a negative thing and who knows what that'll do to him.

Marshall is already half-way through his IP total of last year. And in 2004, he only threw 77.2 IP. And since he's only 23, there isn't much of a reason to push him.

I think even if he gets sent down, his confidence should be sky high.

If the Cubs hadn't be woefully bad, I could see them seizing on the opportunity to trade Marshall for a big time bat. As it is, I think that Miller will either work out of the pen upon his return or Marshall will be sent down to start.

If the Cubs climb back into the chase for a playoff spot (highly unlikely), Marshall will be the name other teams ask for when dealing with the Cubs.
