I'm not saying this because there's no statistical backing, I'm speaking theoretically, like I told Soul. Holding people accountable has an effect, but it's not necessarily a positive one. And again, given the nature of baseball compared to other sports(this is why Phil Jackson comparisons are poor examples), I question whether such a calling out of players would be likely to have a positive effect, and even if it does I think the difference in performance is likely to be marginal.

Again, I completely disagree, but that's how it goes.

I think that if you call out the group rather than single out individuals, it can have a positive effect.

If that's the case then the Cubs' fans of 1983 should have been the best fans in the world after Lee Elia's tirade.

More gems from Dusty:

"That's what happens," Baker said. "All I can say is if I'm not doing a good enough job when things are going bad, you have to give me the same props when things are going good. Sometimes your best isn't good enough. All you can do is do the best job you can do. You don't think I've turned over every piece of paper or bush to figure this thing out?"

Asked about dealing with criticism in Chicago, Baker shrugged.

"Somebody has to be a target," he said. "The more I'm there, the less I listen to it. I ain't crying. Go do your own thing, do the best you can. Sometimes the best isn't good enough."

When has the bolded part happened since 2003 during Dusty's tenure? The collapse of 04? the crapola of 05? The abomination of 06?

I don't doubt you've tried Dusty, you're just a moron and even though you're not as responsibile for this 06 performance, you're still one of the worst managers in MLB. Please just leave, if your best isn't good enough. I'll PAY for your flight back to the West Coast.

Maybe Bruce can answer this since he's on the road with the team right now.

Does Dusty leave Theriot shackled to the bench all night or does he let Ryan go back to the hotel after each game so he doesn't have to sleep in the dugout?

You have to have talent to win, period. Injuries, a lack of timely hitting, and poor planning have left this club where it is. No amount of managerial moves would have the Cubs over .500 right now. Leyland was the manager of the Rockies here, and wore out his welcome after one season of .444 baseball. He called out players regularly, and it didn't make the Rockies any better, because the team's talent sucked. Without the right player mix, no amount of managerial skill will turn things around.

"Lighting a fire" only does so much...I'm sure most of us played baseball at the high school or college level, and I don't remember ever being in a slump due to a lack of effort, where a coach could get me out of it by chewing my ass out in front of my parents. So why would Dusty publically call out players when the whole team is struggling. Good way to lose a team.

You don't have to necessarily call them out, but when they continually make mental mistakes and play poor fundamental baseball you can set their butts on the bench. Case in point, what in the wild wild world of sports was he thinking by starting Neifi at 2nd base last night? What was the point of bringing up The Riot? Dusty is a nincompoop.

You also have to play smart and this has been the dumbest team in baseball since Opening Day 2003. That's on the manager.

If a coach is not going to chew someone for a lack of effort, then when will they? That is my question now. If Jones hit the cutoff man regularly and ran the bases intelligently, I can overlook the lack of hitting. In other words, I don't want to rip them for failing, I want to rip them for failing and playing like an idiot. And it's not just Jones. Hairston (who I think has the potential to be a valuable utility man) makes mental errors. They are fairly well documented. This goes for several of other players at different times. That's why I want to see someone called out.

Maybe they are behind the scenes and it's not working.

Dusty keeps solidifying is idiot status. Sounds like he's trying to talk himself into an extension too. Well, when we get good, I get credit, right? You're right Dusty! Here's a two year extension! Remember, we sucked this year cuz of injuries!

If everybody could keep citing the times where a manager calling out players in public helped and keep ignoring the times when it didn't, that'd be great.

I'll go next. Don Baylor on Corey Patt...no wait.

How about last year's WS champs? Guillen called those guys out about once a week (and still does). It doesn't mean that it works in every situation. However, I think it would be a good thing for this Cubs team in light of their problems, which include bonehead baserunning mistakes and the like.

How about the previous 7 years WS champs? Francona, McKeon, Scioscia, Brenly, and Torre are all much closer to Baker as they are to the blithering idiot on the south side.

Maybe Francona and Brenly, but I disagree with your assessment of Scioscia, Torre and McKeon. They hold their guys accountable and demand concentration. They don't make excuses for their guys in the press based on weather or travel, as Baker often does.

My point is not that this is an absolute rule, but stressing accountability and hustle makes a difference in most situations. Bobby Cox is another example of this.

What is Bobby Cox's record this year btw? Hint: 14-18, look familiar?

Are you seriously arguing that the fact that Braves are 14-18 is indicative of Cox's managing abilities or style? If you are, please excuse me while I ignore your argument.

And if you check, I believe you will find that the Braves had similar record at this time last year...the year when they won their 14th straight division title.

Picking nits, but the Expos disagree.

Fair enough - their 14th div title in 15 years - still as impressive as any feat in recent history. I agree the 'Spos got hosed in 94'.

Baker's world of delusion is quickly leading to the creation of J.R.'s world of dementia.

Someone has got to be held accountable for the events of the last 2 1/2 years.

Baker's World of Delusion sounds like some ride at the state fair. Get in the little car and have it move about as full scale pictures of Jose Macias and Neifi Perez pop up out of the floor at random intervals. Of course, such a ride would not be suitable for little kids or the elderly.

LOL

So now we have 18 threads floating around about how bad Dusty Baker is?

I for one will have no part in it.
