Sitting in the 90-92 range with touches of 94 is not bad, especially if he shows more control than he has throughout much of his career. His pitches have always had plenty of movement on them, too.

How was the curve?

It sounded like it was pretty darn good!

Looking forward to hearing the reports from people who were there.

Could he possibly go this Thursday against SF?
On 3 days rest, not likely. :D

Well... no Barry Bonds 714/715 for him then. First game of the homestand it is!

Wood will still get a second rehab start in order to get his pitch count up. He'll probably also be able to get in a little more work with runners on, which he didn't get tonight.

Sounds like we'll get to hear about the press conference from Nathan before Banedon gets back.

I would still like to see another rehab start. He'll be lucky to make it 5 innings in a major league start with a 70-80 pitch limit.

So wouldl Angel Guzman, thats the dilemna. Both pitched today so Wood could take Gooz' spot in the rotation very nicely.

Boy is it a breath of fresh air to see Woody throwing the ball so well given all the miserable baseball the Cubs have been playing lately. I still think this is a dangerous team with a rotation of Zambrano, Prior, Woody, Maddux, Marshall/Miller and D-Lee back in the second half.

Marshall and Maddux must have been talking to him, and telling him to ignore the idiots Baker and Rothschild, who seem to think that pitchers need to be uber-careful.

Let's keep it in perspective people. He is facing Low A hitters.

I'm happy he's done so well, but I'm not going to get excited until he comes back and does the same (only with more innings).

The problem is, we will be lucky to be only 10 games out of first by then.

I hope that gun is wrong because 92mph from Kerry Wood is super low.

he hit 97 a few times. mostly 92-94

that's a little more reassuring :)

Yeah, it is. :)

I watched Wood tonight in person. He threw very effortlessly anf had good command. There were not even many foul balls.

He did hit one batter though, as usual.

Wood Ties O’Brien Field Record With 12 K’s

Norwood Homers to Win It; Chiefs Catapult Into First Place Tie

Peoria, IL – Behind Kerry Wood’s magnificent performance and Ryan Norwood’s two-run, walk-off homer in the tenth inning, the Peoria Chiefs completed the sweep of the Lansing Lugnuts with a 5-3 extra inning victory Sunday night at O’Brien Field. Wood gave the capacity crowd of 8,426 everything they came to see, looking close to untouchable, striking out 12 batters in five innings of work.

With one out in the tenth, Kevin Collins singled up the middle. The next batter was Ryan Norwood. The Chiefs’ first baseman launched a game-winning two-run HR down the left field line off of Lugnuts’ closer Paul Phillips giving the Chiefs a 5-3 win.

Wood struck out the side in the first inning on 12 pitches. He allowed a walk and a hit in the second but racked up three more strikeouts. In the third he again struck out the side and added a 10th strikeout to start the fourth. Wood struck out the last two batters he faced in the fifth to tie Rich Hill’s O’Brien Field record with 12 punchouts. Wood walked off the field after the fifth to a standing ovation having thrown 70 pitches.

The Chiefs rallied with two outs in the first to take a 1-0 lead. With two away and nobody on, Peoria connected on three consecutive singles, the latter by Norwood, to score Jesus Valdez.

Peoria added two more in the fifth on a towering HR by Valdez. Davy Gregg singled with one away. Two batters later, Valdez ripped a homer into the sea of fans in the left field lawn.

The Lugnuts came all the way back to tie it in the seventh. With one run in already and two away, Lansing recorded back-to-back RBI singles to make it a brand new game at 3-3. Wood went five innings on the hill giving up no runs on two hits, walking one and punching-out 12. Jeff Teasley came on and gave up three runs in two innings. Reliever Justin Rayborn came on after that. He threw two spotless frames. Mike Billek pitched a one, two, three tenth inning and earned his third victory of the year. Billy Carnline, who came into tonight’s action with a league leading 0.32 ERA, pitched five innings of three-run baseball giving up a season high eight hits. Phillips took the loss, his first defeat of the season.

Pepsi Player of the Game

Kerry Wood (RHP) & Ryan Norwood (1B) – The Chiefs’ starter got the win and allowed just three baserunners in five innings of work. Norwood was 3-5 with the GW homer and a 3 RBI night.

Notes… The first 10 batters retired by Wood were all via the strikeout… Wood tied an O’Brien Field record with his twelve strikeouts, a number previously reached by LHP Rich Hill last season...The Chiefs are in first place in the Midwest League Western Division for the first time this season…Attendance Sunday night was 8,426 the 6th biggest crowd in franchise history and the 5th biggest ever at O’Brien Field …The Chiefs will begin an eight game road trip starting tomorrow…LHP Donnie Veal (2-2, 2.42) will start on the mound for the Chiefs going up against RHP Grant Varnell (1-2, 2.60)…First pitch is slated for 5:00 PM and the pre-game show will kick-off at 4:45 on http://www.peoriachiefs.com.
