Who is with me?

Who else watches games half hoping that the Cubs don't score because you know they aren't anywhere close to a respectable team, so you might as well cheer for them to not score so you can calculate ridiculous futility statistics.

Who else just doesn't care anymore?

Sort of.

I predicted around .500 if all went as expected this year, and I certainly didn't expect to lose Lee. So I enver really had much hope that this was actually a team that could make the playoffs. Still, it really *es me off to watch.

But the one silver lining I find in seeing them struggle is that the longer the Cubs are absolutely putrid, the more chance the organization will actually make management personnel changes, which I believe are 1-2 years overdue.

this has mega thread potential.

i can't start rooting against the cubs this early on. i'll bet many are already rooting against them, so baker, jones & pierre, etc. are gone.

Yea.. I'm pretty close to apathy, too, at this point. Not because I really don't care, but because I know that we can't expect much.

No reason for hope.

Who would've thought, back in late 2003/early 2004, that the Bulls would be looking more set for a bright future than the Cubs?

I can never root against the Cubs. Here are my reasons why. Short of losing every game from here on out the management is probably here to stay, sadly as it is. Unlike other sports there is not as much of a reward through the draft if you suck.

I said before the season I wanted a quick fall from contention and a midseason fire sale followed by a wholesale callup of minor leaguers. If that stuff happens the team will be better next year. In fact they should be pretty damn good.

Save the fire sale that is already happening. Cedeno, Murton, and our 3 rookie starters.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Rusch and Williams in the rotation again after Hill and Guzman get traded in a futile attempt to salvage the season. As long as they don't trade Murton, I'll take it in stride.

If they trade Murton, I'll stop being a Cubs fan.

The handwriting was on the wall a long time ago. As long as we have Neifi, Jacque, and a marginally better CF in Pierre, and as long as we rely on getting starters back that have never performed over the long term, the Cubs are doomed. And always will be. I will always be a Cubs fan, always, but the futility here is self-imposed, pure and simple. Ronny, Todd, Derrek, Aramis, Greg, and Matt cannot compensate for Juan, Jacque, Glendon, Neifi, and the rest of the sub .300 OBP guys. Baseball doesn't work that way, and nobody should be surprised by the outcome. We gave away three promising pitchers to get Juan Pierre, is anyone surprised by the results? Clearly Juan was better than Corey, but he's not worth three good (but not great) pitchers. Baker needs to go...along with the rest of the management...period.

And yet Hendry gets an extension...

It's truly embarrasing to have this high of a payroll, but put this kind of product on the field.

"and the beat goes on..."

I do care, but I don't waste much time dwelling on it anymore these days. And for all those "chicken littles", it is still far too early to give up on the entire season, although, I'll admit it doesn't look good.

I never root against them, but I don't blame anyone for being frustrated with their play. They stink right now. The manager stinks right now (and has stunk for a while). If they are in this spot on Memorial Day, I'll raise the white flag.

I also admit that I am far more excited by the Bulls and NBA draft night, a mere 6 weeks away.

There were 2 positives last night. Aramis got 2 hits, which has to be his first multihit game in a while, and Marshall pitched well again.

As long as the Tribune owns this team, they will lose. A successful season to them is a profitable one. We need an owner who will settle for nothing less then championship baseball.

But still, this is the worst Cubs team in decades... the wheels have totally come off the bus and like the OP, I find myself reveling in my fan-depravity... the Cubs set new records in futility each year and if nothing else, I can point to that as my source of entertainment.

Sadly though even Reds fans have more to chear about then Northsiders.

It's time to blow it up.

-leave Dusty in SF with his entire staff

-send Jacque back to the AL

-dangle Pierre for whatever you can get

-ditto Hill

-ditto Rusch

-DFA Bynum, Restovich

-send Hairston anywhere

Then:

-hire anyone with a clue to run the club

-call up Pie

-keep Marshall and Guzman in the rotation as long as possible, then deal one of them or start taking bids for Prior

-call up Theriot

Yes, I'm hitting the panic button, and no, it won't happen. Would the results be any worse, though?

These two make no sense. But yeah, its about time to fire Dusty and get some of these scrubs out of here.

Not caring a month into the season and/or rooting against them? Seriously?

I just can't fathom that.

I'm pretty much there. Better a catastrophic failure followed up by house cleaning than another mediocre season that brings back the same staff and players next year.

I don't see how the Cubs can trade Hill or Guzman right now given that their value is not as high as it should be. We all know that Guzman got rushed to the bigs due to our injury situation, so we shouldn't be surprised at the results to date. Heck, even the phenom Hernandez in Seattle is struggling. If we think Woody won't be back next year, don't we have to keep Guzman and probably Hill?

I haven't completely stopped watching but I haven't made it through a whole game in 10 days.

Here is what I would like to see happen:

- Trade Aram. ARam can be a top 3rd baseman but his motivation is questionable. Can probably get some top quality prospects for him.

- Make Jaquestrap Jones run laps til his balls fall off. We are stuck with him.

- Keep Murton, Pierre and Cedeno. I have found new respect for Walker for his attitude on and off field since season began. But his trade value may be high and would move him for a quality player.

- Get what you can for Prior/Wood/Maddux. A good GM could get quite alot for those 3 in different deals. A top 3B prospect would be a necessity.

- Bring up Pie.

- Get rid of Neifi and Hairston, try some kids with some hustle.

(sorry not as up on the farm system as I should be.

- Try Barrett at 3B because he can't catch, throw or call a game.

I wouldn't mind losing if we were hustling / trying / developing. This overpaid bunch of Losers has me clicking to the Sox more often than I want to.

Apathy is sadly a word that fits my feelings exactly. I'm not even mad anymore at the organization, players or manager - I'm apathetic and disappointed.

There isn't a single player on this team or in this organization that I would consider an untouchable as far as trades go - the sad thing is that I've lost trust in Hendry to make moves that upgrade our team. I simply don't trust his judgement in ballplayers much anymore. I don't like the direction the organization takes in regards to the total lack of plate discipline stressed and I question how we develop our young pitchers given so many of the injuries we keep seeing over and over.

I used to think that the Cubs being run as a business to make the most profit possible would keep them from ever winning the WS - I still think that's a part of the equation, but we have a reasonably respectable team salary - it's just not being spent wisely. I have a feeling the only way I'll ever see a Cubs WS is if we get lucky some season and have 3-5 guys play way over their heads all year long. Man what I wouldn't give to be able to cheer for a team that contends for the division lead year in and year out.

I'm wondering why everyone who suggested trading Wood in the presason was shouted down with "HE HAS A NO-TRADE CLAUSE!", but now it seems more and more are suggesting it with none of the same vitrolic response.

Not me. I couldn't stand doing that. But whatever floats your boat, man. I understand the frustration though.

I just don't care enough about being apathetic, I guess.
