I'll bet Rusch has some trade value left. It's not like Hendry was "negotiating against himself." Hopefully, Rusch can look decent in the mop-up role and they can deal him during the summer.

He wasn't negotiating against himself? I thought he signed Glendon before Glendon talked to any other teams.

so he negotiated against himself for lee too? there was a market for rusch, he just didn't let him test it.

Are you really comparing the free agent markets for Lee and Rusch? Are you implying they should have been handled similarly? Yes, Hendry locked up the MVP contender without letting him test the free agent market. So he should've done the same with the inconsistent, journeyman left hander?

I'm not sure you could get anything for Rusch in a trade, but if you place him on waivers there's a good chance someone picks him up. At least in that case, the Cubs rid themselves of that contract.

I'm not sure Rusch adds anything to the bullpen that Williams, Ryu, Wuertz, or any number of other arms could bring. He should be released.

You really think there's a good chance?

There's teams that are in need of pitching. Rusch's deal is still affordable. Some GM's would look at his 2004-2005 performance and value it more than what he's done this year.

I could see Texas as one team that might grab him.

The thought of Glendon calling Arlington his home makes me giggle.

Yeah...if he doesn't work out as a pitcher, there's quite a few [expletive] bars in the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex he could find work at.

i'm not implying they should have been handled similarly. just saying that under goony's definition, hendry negotiated against himself for lee, ramirez and wood too. those 3 along w/ rusch were locked up before free agency.

the bottom line is that there would have been a market for rusch. several teams were very desperate for pitching.

As long as there are guys like Bowden and Colletti running teams in the Major Leagues, there will always be a market for guys like Rusch.

I don't think anyone believes that there was a 2/$5M market for Glendon. Lee, Ramirez, and Wood (at the time) were all given contracts that have a fair market value.

I think he has less waiver value to teams than he'd bring in a trade. On a waivers, teams have to pick up his whole salary. In a trade, they can have the Cubs pay some of that.

Now, if the Cubs gave him his unconditional release, thereby picking up his entire salary -- he'd probably be a fairly hot commodity.

If you want to go by strict definitiions, fine, he negotiated against himself for those guys. The difference is, those guys were good and there would have been a big market. Not so for Rusch, who was a NRI for a reason a couple years ago, he sucks, and baseball people know it. There certainly was no reason to sign him to a 2 year 6 million dollar deal.

I think Rusch still has some trade vaule to some pitching thin teams as long as the Cubs eat some of his salry this year. Rusch could be very well turn himself around out of the pen.

The Cubs haven't released anything officially, but Rich Hill was just talking (briefly) on The Score so, it's true.

what'd he say?

It was brief because he had to got to batting practice.

B&B asked him what, if any, adjustments he's made since he struggled last year with the Cubs (because of his hot start in AAA). In response, Hill said he hadn't made any physical adjustments but he has alterted his presence on the mound. He is more confident and feels that the experiences last season will only help him have a positive transition to the MLs this season.

They also had some banter about Wrigley Field and how the bad smell is indicative of bodies being buried within...

LOL, they were trying to warm him up before asking about his pitching. They did get him to laugh so it worked.

First hand report from Nashville is that Hill is not with the team.

from cbs...

The Chicago Cubs recalled left-hander Rich Hill from Iowa on Monday and sent right-hander David Aardsma to the Triple-A team.

Cubs manager Dusty Baker said Hill will likely start Thursday at Arizona in place of Glendon Rusch, who will pitch out of the bullpen after a string of bad starts.

How about Rusch to KC for Stairs?

No rush to trade Rusch. Perhaps he can recapture his mojo in the bullpen. If he's traded, Florida might be a nice destination - a team with little to lose that might benefit from advice from a veteran.

I wouldn't wish exile in KC on anybody.
