Rich Hill is expected to arrive today from Class AAA Iowa and replace Glendon Rusch in the starting rotation Thursday at Arizona. Reliever David Aardsma, meanwhile, was summoned to manager Dusty Baker's office Sunday after a 9-0 loss to the Brewers at Wrigley Field and came out to shake hands with some teammates.

At least they aren't putting up with losing this year this early, regardless of all of the excuses injuries bring with them...

Well, everyone who wanted to see the kids pitch, here you go! 60% of the rotation is now Hill, Marshall and Guzman. Heck, lets' trade Zambrano and move Maddux to short relief so we can get Ryu and Brownlie up here too!

How's Hill done this year? He got knocked around up here last year.

He's been really good.

Why not Ryu? He was battling for a job in the rotation this spring, and barely lost to Marshall.

And what is the point of putting Rusch in the bullpen. Just get rid of him!

The point is they feel they have to justify the deal they foolishly signed him to. They won't just pay him to go away.

Like most of you, on a production/inning basis I prefer Wuertz to Rusch. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't keep Rusch in the pen. We are in dire need of mop-up guy that can throw 85 pitches every once in a while and stay (relatively) effective. Our bullpen has been thrown into disarray whenever we need somebody to come in and go 3 innings, as nobody was capable of it before.

This is definately the right move to be made, in this situation.

I agree they should just cut bait on him. I'm hoping the reason they're holding on to him is they're hoping a Cards or Stros reliever goes down, and they need help. Offer him up to one of those teams (and pay his salary if we must). Don't need anything back, just promise to have them pitch him as often as they can possibly work him in.

so you're disappointed that rusch is out of the rotation? i don't care if the rotation is vets, kids, or women, i'd just like to see someone not give up a hr every other inning.

he really wasn't as bad as his #'s would lead you to believe. he had two really bad starts (1 1/3 ip, 7 runs and 3 ip, 6 runs) that really skew his numbers, but he also had a stretch of 15+ innings where he allowed just four runs.

i hope the cubs have a little patience with him. oh, and about friggin' time. :D

I wouldn't mind him being gone, but at the same time, I wouldn't mind him doing the dirty work in blowout games like that last 2. Rather than using 3-4 guys for an inning or 2 a piece, I'd much rather have a mop-up guy eat up those innings. IIRC, Rusch did a solid job back there before, and I'd much rather use him than someone like Hill in that spot. I think that's part of the reason that Welly and Leicester struggled, they were stuck in that long relief role which is so unpredicatable. They went from starting or having a relief role, to pitching whenever the Cubs were getting blown out. I'd rather use a guy in that role who we aren't trying to develop.

On a team so devoid of offense, it would be nice not to waste roster space with 7 relievers, but if Rusch is going to stay, then yes, he better be used as the garbage man. I don't want him anywhere near an important relief inning.

I'm glad to see they did something about the Rusch problem, but I would have preferred to see him released. Hendry should admit his mistake release him and move on. That would be the best for the team. We now have 3 rookie starters, wow.

Thank you. I'm not a big Rusch fan either but people act like he's been completely worthless the last two years and he hasn't. It's not time to throw him away yet. Jeez.

why not give jerome williams another shot?? :o j/k

i don't think anyone could have predicted 3 rookies being in the rotation along with murton & cedeno starting. i guess being in the last year of a contract can change a man. dusty must want to work after 2006.
