Cubs Shopping Maddux?

A good one from the rumor mill over at Gotham Baseball. Unfortunately their page is not working right now so here's a link to MetsBlog's take on Gotham's report. According to Gotham, Greg Maddux is being shopped. Interested parties: Mets, Yankees, Brewers, Phillies, Diamondbacks, Royals, and Cardinals.

The Cubs would essentially be reducing their rotation to "Carlos Zambrano and pray for a tornado," but Maddux is an impending free agent. My opinion from a couple of weeks ago: he's the same old Mad Dog, just with a well-timed hot streak. Still, dealing him now would be a very early white flag for a Cubs team with a $94MM payroll. Doesn't seem to compute. And the obligatory intradivision thing must be cited for the Brewers and Cards. I am surprised no West Coast teams have been mentioned.

Buzz: Gotham Says Mets, and others, Like Maddux

by Matthew Cerrone at 02:20PM (EDT) on April 25, 2006 | Permanent Link

The guys at Gotham Baseball cite ‘industry sources,’ as saying the Cubs are actively shopping RHP Greg Maddux, who has an ERA of 0.99 this season following four starts…

According to Gotham, the Mets, as well as the Yankees, Brewers, Phillies, D’Backs, Royals and Cardinals, among others, are interested…

…i have no idea what to make of this…honestly, i have not had my hands in the rumor mill for quite some time, since teams typically do a whole lotta talking, and no trading, prior to june…that being said, the only team in that above list that i have ever heard linked to the cubs and maddux is the phillies, and, honestly, i would not even put a whole lot of stock into where i heard that from…

…from a baseball p.o.v., if this is accurate, what are the cubs thinking…their rotation is a disaster…and pitching wins…so, if there is a reason to not buy into this, it’s that from chicago’s position, any deal that didn’t bring back an effective starter would be foolish, and why would any team trade an effective starter for maddux…something just doesn’t add up to me, and it seems way, way too early for this type of deal to occur…

if the cubs trade maddux i will cease to be a cubs fan, i quit the team for 2 1/2 years when we let him get away the first time, this time i wont come back(at least for a very VERY long while)

There is absolutely no reason why the Cubs should be shopping Maddux. It's one thing to try and figure out if they want to resign him or not. But they absolutely should not trade him.

It's so bogus it's hard to know where to begin.

I tend to start with the letter 'A.' As in abso-frickin'-lutely NOT HAPPENING.

yeah well...when i picked it, i kinda forgot about that, but if you take the 2 1/2 years off the time since i became a cubs fan it has been 29 years...just not consecutive...plus i never rooted for another team, just quit watchin baseball almost altogather for the years in question

its kinda like remaining loyal to your wife, ya might quit havin sex for long periods at some point, but that doesnt mean you're tom catin around town...so your relationship brings you no joy, you ignore it for a while, but that doesnt mean you just jump in bed with the first baseball team to come along...anyway, i could have easily become a braves fan but i didnt(questioning my own judgement there)

dude.....i KNEW it!!!

This from the New Jersey Star-Ledger?

They also reported a reanimated zombie will take his place in the rotation.

only after Wood, Prior and Miller come back. Maddux might wear down midway through the season. If it gets us a decent RF for the future then I am all for it. I am not convinced this is the year anyway. There will be a surplus of pitching. A rotation of Zambrano, Prior, Marshall, Guzman, Miller/Hill for next year with a decent offense is the net benefit. I like Maddux and hope he ends up as a coach/manager in the Cubs system after his playing days are over. Alex Gonzalez broke his wrist in 2004 and he was out 2 1/2 months and he came back his normal self so Lee probably can do the same. He should still have value at the deadline and teams in the hunt will be more willing to trade if they need pitching.

Maddux for Abreu?

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking.

I love Maddux and all, but I'd love Abreu that much more.

yeah, but Agon mostly hit weak grounders and K'd, its pretty easy to come back fully when you SUCKED to start with

That's what I was thinking, but as long as it's only a rumor, how about Maddux for Pujols even up.

I like that one. They may want to throw in Reyes as well, seeing as to how he couldn't beat out Ponson for a spot in the rotation.
