I think how hot he has started out, both last year and after he joined us in 2004 has colored the average fans perception of what he has accomplished as a Cub.

Well, I just wish there was a group of people would start that kind of treatment aganist Neifi. *hint hin*

I talked some junk about Neifi at a Rockies game (more Cub fans than Rockies). Some lady told me to shut up and that he was great. He went 3-4 or something. Worst Cub win I ever saw.

The best Cub win I ever saw was when Prior was steping to the plate. The starter was getting rocked and I made the comment, "Prior has never hit a homer in his career, but I think he's going yard this AB." A Rockie fan turned around and jeered at me, and as soon as he turned around Prior crushed one right at us, opposite field. He turned around again and gave me a look like I had just steped on his kid's head. One of the best games I saw at Coors Field, apart from the Sammy 3HR 9 RBI game.

Neifi sucks, he's always sucked, and he'll continue to suck. Everyone knows this, so why boo? He's signed to be a backup. Most people were disappointed with Jones before he ever played a game, but he's counted on to be a productive, middle of the order hitter. That's why people boo him.

I think this "common fan" stuff is rubbish. It is, after all, a game, not splitting the atom.

Also, Tony Bautista is in the ugliest swing conversation.

Neifi is a bench player who brings a gold glove and flexibility to the middle infield positions yet still sucks?

A LOT of MLB teams would take a gold glove middle infielder to serve in a backup role.

yet he was somehow w/o a job until the cubs saved him (so he could save them in return, of course).

low expectations

jones makes $5 million per year and patterson was touted as a great prospect.

all the stuff about dusty, "he saved us," and strikeouts is rubbish.

I don't think the strikeouts thing is rubbish... but I do think that C-Patt was a colassal disapointment and Jones was signed (stupidly) for over $5M a year to fill a hole in RF. Meanwhile, Neifi was basically a cast-off who came for nothing. People expect nothing of him -- and he doesn't disappoint, in that respect.

I don't think the guy sucks. Everyone here seems to think he's horrible, but he offers great flexibility playing 3rd, short and 2nd, a left handed bat and a veteran presence.

Compare Neifi to other backup middle infielders in baseball and I think he'd look pretty favorable. It's all relative....

do you understand why backup infielders are backup infielders? it's because they suck.

i put zero importance in all three of the things that you give neifi credit for.

Yeah, and compare me to your average weekend golfer and I look pretty favorable too. Sure, I shot a 92 today, but I'm better than the old guy who can't hit it more than 100 yards, or the lady who's afraid of the ball.

Apparently you didn't take the Dusty Baker seminar: "Playing Baseball The Right Way"

To each his own. I think they're pretty important, but that's fine.

Do you or this weekend golfer player you're comparing yourself to play on the PGA tour? If I'm using your analogy, there's no sense comparing a guy ranked #125 in the world playing every tournament to make some cuts and some money to someone ranked in the top 50 with plenty of earnings and sponsor money.

Compared to a Tejada or someone, yeah Neifi sucks. Compared to a Graffanino or any other backup infielder, I like him.

Neifi's career OBP is .301, and that's with a few years in Coors to pad his stats. Graffanino's is .336.

Neifi's career OPS+ is 65; Graffanino's is 91. Graffanino creates almost 0.6 runs per 27 outs more than Neifi. I'd say Tony is clearly better than Neifi, even with Neifi being better on defense.

Like I have said before, you cant adequately hope to understand the power of the Neifury, being a mere mortal and all.

I will try to explain a little....the Neifury hustles. The Neifury is versatile. The Neifury is quick. The Neifury has a Gold Glove and can play SS better than most other mere mortals. The Neifury puts the ball in play and does not like to walk. The Neifury will sneak up on you when you least expect it and kill you before you know he is even there. The Neifury also spreads his message to the younger ones (like when Cedeno skipped the ball to the plate the other nite and cost us a run) so that one day they too will be able to revel in the power of the Neifury. And he does all of this while quietly spending most of his time on the bench, waiting for his occasional start.

We should be so fortunate to know the true awsomeness of the Neifury.

It's harder to boo an infielder from the bleachers.

Perez is a backup middle infielder, he's supposed to suck. Booing him would be redundant.

On strikeouts: I'll take a nine-pitch strikeout over a one-pitch groundout. Strikeouts are not the worst thing in the world, people.

Why people boo Jones so early, I have no idea. Patterson and Neifi have about the same career OPS and Neifi is a SS. That illustrates just how bad a hitter Patterson is, so it shouldn't be surprising he was booed. He is on a big hot streak though (4 for last 17). Neifi's numbers aren't that bad compared to previous Cubs shortstops, and Neifi isn't even the starter.

Neifi doesn't get booed as much for two reasons. One, no one in their right mind (except Dusty) ever has any expectations for him. And two, since he swings at the first pitch so often, the fans can't get prepared to boo him for his inevitable first pitch ground out to second base.

That was a heck of a relay throw by Perez after Mabry screwed up in the OF.

Meachem understands the power of the Neifury and held that runner, or he would have been a dead duck.

The Niefury is so frightening that not even the number 13 scares him.

That's a heck of a performance that Neifi put on the plate today as well. Just awful.
