So to quickly recap: he starts of by saying that edmonds doesn't have the traditional stats to get in, but modern SABR methods of looking at players might do it for him. He looks at him with these methods and Edmonds comes up well short in every single category. From this he concludes that Edmonds is a likely HOF CF.

That is pretty much how I read it too.

If he retired 15 to 20 years ago he might have a shot, might. But with the offensive explosion of the past decade there is no way he gets in. None.

Depends on how many of the writers focus on the sabermetrics. And if Jimmy continues to build on them.

He won't be a 1st ballet, that's for sure.

I could see him slipping in during a weak year or maybe he'll fall all the way to the veterans committee.

(and please, lets keep the homophobia to a minimum in this thread)

He needs at the very least 3 more years of production like 2000-2004 and with his age and aggressive style of play taking it's toll I don't think there is any way he will or should get in.

If he gets in, its because of his Defense not his offense. He just happens to have decent offensive numbers to go along with the GG's. Agree he needs 2 more pretty good offenisve years though to be considered seriously for the HOF.

Only 2 of the 20 guys on his comparables list (similar batters and similar batters thru age 35) are in the Hall (Stargell and Kiner). He's in the same class of guys like Larry Walker, Ellis Burks, Paul O'Neill. Pretty good, but not elite, thus not quite Hall worthy.

The numbers just aren't there. He'd have to have a couple more really good seasons to warrant serious consideration.

and that very well could happen.

he just needs to find out what Maddux did last off season!

Get less fat? I don't think that's going to help Edmonds.

do you know just how highly unlikely it is that it will happen? a couple years ago I looked through the stats of almost all of the greatest all time sluggers to see if we could expect Sosa to have some more good years. in all of this research, I found two players in the history of baseball that had a significant slip in numbers in their late to mid 30's, like Edmonds last year, then resurged to have good years. they are Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds, and neither of them had as significant of a dropoff as Edmonds did from 04-05.

if Edmonds gets in for his defense, the Cards will have two of the three players in the entire HOF elected because of defense, and the only two elected by the writers, and the only one in the HOF because of severely overrated defense.

on that note, Omar Vizquel, certain HOF'er? if Ozzie was, Omar is.

I think Ozzie is overrated (blasphemy I know) because of the good teams he was on. Also the acrobatics and the fact that "whitey ball" made a lasting impact on the game and he was a part of it.

I agree that Ozzie getting in means Omar should.

That's easily the worst Joe Sheehan article I've ever read.

yeah, i was pretty disappointed by it as well. it sorta seemed like he did his research then when ahead and stated his initial feelings even though they didn't really match up.

i think it will help him that he's been an anchor on this recent cardinal dynasty. 8) they have the best fans you know, and maybe they can't vote, but still...
